Divine
Inspiration
Ahead of performing at the Greenwich Summer Sessions, Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy spoke to Rosemary Berry about his memories of the area - and seeing ferrets walked in the park!
Neil, have you been to Greenwich before? I moved to London in the 90s and stayed for 10 years and occasionally ventured out in this direction. It's a very, very lovely part of the capital. I lived all over south London, Clapham, Camberwell, Battersea, Brixton, the list is endless.
Neil Hannon raises his hat to Greenwich
Where did you visit in Greenwich? I met some friends here in a pub many years ago, it's too long ago in the distant past to remember which one. A couple of years ago I met a friend Jobie here in the park. I remember it specifically because I saw a couple of ferrets being taken for a walk on a lead! I steered well clear. The Observatory is a beautiful building. And the park is one of the more rolling parks in London, most of them are very flat.
Are you happy to be performing here as part of the Greenwich Summer Sessions? I was delighted when I got the call. Quite often I play at festivals and the surrounding buildings resemble car parks, not very glamourous at all, but the architecture here is stunning alongside the River Thames.
When you play a concert do you hang around or fly home straight away? I flew in from Dublin at 6.30 this morning. In the old days you would want to take in the sites and live for every moment. But when you’re 20 years into a career and you’ve got so many other things on your plate like family, other lines of work - and dogs! - you do tend to do the show, go to bed and fly out straight in the morning. It’s sad in a way, but I still keep doing it because once I’m on stage I’m very happy and I enjoy it so much. Touring is not like a glorified holiday, there so much sitting around. The hardest element is having to concentrate at 10pm on stage because usually at that time I’m falling asleep in front of the TV watching Frasier!
The stage looks out over Canary Wharf, the finance district you sing about in the Complete Banker single in your latest album Bang Goes the Knighthood... I was doing a sound check earlier and looked up and I thought ‘Oh yeah, I can work with that!’ I often wonder when I play that song if there are any merchant bankers in the audience, but I haven’t had any complaints yet from banker Divine Comedy fans saying we’re not really as fat as that, but it’s not really a serious work. Often that's the best way to put a point across, through dark humour.
What are you doing now? I seem to be working mostly in opera. The Royal Opera House asked me to write a mini opera for people who haven’t written one before and they asked me. They are called Opera Shots and I can’t believe I’m doing one, but it’s going to be great fun. To my astonishment my ultimate hero Scott Walker is also doing one as well, I might get to say hi.
