recent survey indicates that their promotional offers do nothing to encourage consumers to experiment or explore new wines. Many people have little idea where the wine is coming from, what grape has been used, or how it was made, they merely know the price. Yet by being informed, people can gain so much more pleasure in how to enjoy wine, and more importantly, how to buy much better. I have been running wine courses in Blackheath for over sixteen years now, and hope to try and share my love of wine by offering tastings, which introduce people to the skills of tasting, rather than merely just drinking, wine. Wine can be an intimidating subject which often appears to be pretentious and unnecessarily complicated, and my aim is always to impart my enthusiasm to people and give them confidence to experiment beyond buying just on price alone. Attending a wine course, or a wine tasting will not only give you an opportunity of sampling at least six wines, that you have never tried before, but will give you the background to how the wines are made, what influences their styles, the history, culture and the geography of wine regions around the world and offer ideas on food matching. This autumn I am running my Introduction to Wine Course at the Blackheath Conservatoire starting on Monday 26 September from 7.30 to 9.30 pm and running for eight weeks for £210. Enrolment forms can be found on www.conservatoire.org.uk or call the office on 020 8852 0234. If you are not a novice, at the Conservatoire I offer five week courses, which

look at countries or wine regions in greater detail. This term one will be on Italy and one on Burgundy. In Greenwich I am offering two three-week courses at Davy’s Wine Vaults, in

Greenwich High Road. The first will look at the classic grape varieties around the world and begins on Thursday 6 October from 7pm to 9pm for £80 for the three weeks. From Tuesday November 15 is a three week course entitled Wines for Christmas, which will cover sweet wines, fortified wines and sparkling and Champagne costing £125. The course will provide plenty of ideas on Christmas buying for entertaining and gifts. Booking is online at www.davy.co.uk/events or call 020 8858.9147. The Davys wine shop also has one off tastings during the autumn starting with one on September 28 in association with another local business – The Cheeseboard in Royal Hill. This is an Introduction to Wine and Cheese tasting cost £35, booking online or by phone as before.
