SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Joe Devine takes a look at space saving design

W

hether you opt for a tradition or a modern contemporary look your bedroom should be a place of peace and calm.

Personal space is not something afforded to

everyone, so if you have got it, it’s worth making the most of. For most people, the bedroom is the room in which you can be most expressive with design and there are many ideas you can use to get the look you want. Space can sometimes be at a premium in

the bedroom, what with having to squeeze in the furniture necessary to make it a bedroom. A simple and effective way of making a room seem bigger is with lots of mirrors. The illusion of extra-space afforded by mirrors can make a huge difference to a room. Even better is having an entire mirrored wall, they can, at a glance, make a room seem to double in size, and, if hiding a walk-in wardrobe behind, can free up space that’d otherwise be taken up by large, clunky furniture. Building a walk-in wardrobe may

mean sacrificing some floor space, but when finished it’ll be more space efficient than a regular wardrobe, and provide the illusion of a bigger bedroom. A feature wall is another

excellent idea for giving your bedroom a personal, customised feel. It’ll draw the attention, answers all your storage problems and can hide chimneybreast and odd shaped parts of a room where no ordinary furniture will fit. As for the details of the actual feature from traditional to contemporary, the only limit is your own imagination. Local designers and bespoke manufactures, Greenwich

Woodworks has a portfolio of projects that can inspire you. They usually suggest prospective clients to make an appointment to visit their showroom and workshop so that they can see samples of furniture and finishes before planning starts. Their team of skilled professional joiners combine traditional

techniques and the best of modern tooling to ensure clean, crisp, and solid construction; finished to the highest standards and installed in your home with care and attention to detail. All the

you choose in the end, remember to utilise that space as best you can, and go after the look you want and then you can sleep easy. Greenwich Woodworks, Friendly
