Val Sabin Publications Transition Link Units Keystage 2 to 3


This is a unique comprehensive, detailed, and user friendly teaching manual specifically written to ease the transition of pupils from different schools into KS3 and unify their experiences and levels of learning. It start with a short overall introduction and then is divided into the three distinct activity areas of Gymnastics, Games and Dance. Each subject is identified by different coloured pages for ease of access and fully indexed as a seperate unit. Throughout the manual, appropriate expectations and challenges are constantly reinforced.


The Structure of the Link Units Each unit of work comprises a detailed introduction to the activity and the material contained within it. There is also a description of how it forms an integral part of the National Curriculum followed by a “what next” section which offers further ideas for progression to fit into the Key Stage 3 scheme of work.


Each unit of work has an overall theme:- • Gymnastics - Balance • Games - Attacking and Defending skills • Dance - Games


The themed units clearly identify the learning objectives, medium - term framework, expected learning outcomes, keywords and language for learning. The structure for all these units is the same , with the material content divided into 7 progressive phases of development (The Transition and Familiarisation Phase and Six further progressive phases). In each Phase the focus and expected learning outcomes are clearly identified.


The final section of each unit decribes and reinforces skills and principles specific to the area of activity and contains a wealth of resources. There are warm-ups and stretching cards, problem -solving activities and check lists as well as two CD’s of specially written music to accompany the gymnastics and dance units.


Standards and Assessment


There is a detailed description of what children should be able to know, understand and do, by the end of Key Stage 2 and by the end of Key Stage 3. There is also a complete, straight-for- ward assessment system which gives teachers a baseline from which to plan approprate challenges and identify targets throughout Key Stage 3.
