Val Sabin Publications Athletics Training


A Val Sabin Athletics course develops and extends the understanding of teachers and builds confidence in their delivery of interesting, exciting and inclusive athletics les- sons in the curriculum. It demonstrates how to develop pupils’ all-round physical and athletic fluency through a wide range of enjoyable and stimulating activities and challenges based on the core actions of walking, running, jumping and throwing.


Each group of core skills and related athletic events are explored and safety issues are identified and addressed throughout the course.


Raising blood temperature Mobilisation of joints. Promoting activity at a higher level of intensity. Participants experience a


range of intrinsically interesting and fun activities to prepare the bodies and minds of the children they teach.


Core skills and principles of running are addressed and experienced. Including conditioned run- ning; challenge; estimating distance; paced running; developing rhythm; sprinting style; sprint start; relay; running over hurdles.


Core skills and principles of throwing are addressed and experienced, including throwing for accuracy; throwing for distance; sling throw (discus) push throw (shot) pull throw (javelin).


Core skills and principles of jumping are addressed and experienced including the five basic jumps; long jump; high jump; combination jumping. Safety issues and organisation are ad- dressed throughout the course.


Participants are made familiar with the contents of the manual and how to use it most effectively. References to the manual are made throughout the course.


Minimum expected standards of performance are identified in detail at Years 2, 4 and 6 to help participants make judgements about levels of attainment, and methods of assessment will be discussed.
