The Winged M History: the 1990s

Today, the Multnomah Athletic Club’s Outdoor Activities program is fl ourishing. Look no further than the rock climbing program, featured on page 24 in this month’s magazine, which has already seen three participants qualify for nationals. But it wasn’t until 1998 that the club even had an organized outdoor program. The September 1998 issue of The Winged M discusses plans for the club’s fi rst season, which kicked off that fall. The program’s survival depended on its popularity at the time. Club members had their choice of three classes to start. Rock climbing was among the originals, although the club didn’t have its own climbing wall at the time. The other classes were orienteering and mountain biking. The program’s goal was to start small, and provide a steady progression of course and skill level. The August 1999 issue gave readers an overview of the program’s initial success, focusing on the early popularity of the rock climbing program. Today, the outdoor program encompasses a host of activities, from mountaineering on the region’s high peaks to scuba certifi cation.
