Jan. 25, with a drawing for 350 families and 175 individuals. The fi rst 2012 appli- cants are expected to join by mid-year, after the last applicants from the 2009 lottery are processed. The remainder of the 2012 applicants are processed during the next three years.

This year, the club is giving an extra lottery ticket to anyone who submits a complete application form by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31. The fi nal applica- tion deadline is 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. Forms and instructions are avail- able from Member Services, on www.
themac.com, and in the insert next to this page. Applications are issued only to members, not directly to applicants. The completed form and $50 application fee must be received in the Member Services Offi ce by the deadline. Postmarks will not count and no extensions are granted.

MAC continues to enjoy a demand for memberships that exceeds the number of openings available. The number of resident members ages seven and older is limited to 17,158, and the new members from the lottery are elected only as membership vacancies occur. The 2012 drawing is smaller than the 1997, 2000 and 2005 lotteries of 700, 750 and 777 respectively; however it is slightly larger than the 2009 lottery of 468. It will not increase the size of the membership. Since 1982 MAC’s lottery system has proven an orderly way to select a pool of applicants to be processed into membership over time. The lottery is an open, straightforward and fair means of creating a list of potential members. One advantage of the lottery over a traditional waiting list is the club’s ability to weight the drawing to meet the club’s strategic membership and demographic goals. A strategic membership goal is to main- tain a core of resident members 25 to 50 years of age. Therefore, applicants 40 years old and younger on Saturday, Jan. 25,
