BEST BET: Irish MICHIGAN IRISH

MUSIC FESTIVAL Sept. 16-18 $2-$10 Heritage Landing, Downtown Muskegon michiganirish.org, (231) 739-2028

FOR ALL THOSE WHO ARE IRISH (or even Irish at heart), the Michigan Irish Music Festival is culturally mandatory. Spreading out the enter- tainment over three days, 22 bands will perform on three covered stages, bringing the sounds of Éireann to the shores of the Great Lakes in grand style. Hear from Michigan talent such as The Mona Shores Fiddlers, Blackthorn and The Conklin Ceili Band as well as musical acts directly from Ireland, namely Slide IE, Beoga (which translates to “vivid” in Irish Gaelic) and Goitse.

The music isn’t the only reason to stay for the festival, though; come and meet some dancin’ feet at the Feis Dance (pronounced “Fesh” Dance, for all of you non-Irish types out there), featuring dancers competing from Beginners to Open, Preliminary and Championship levels. Additional activities include presentations covering a variety of topics from “Muskegon’s Irish in the Civil War” to learning to play the bodhran (BOW-ron), a drum used in traditional Irish music. And don’t forget about the variety of Celtic food and drink served at the Irish pub and Celtic Kitchen… boxties! Corned beef! Potatoes! Reported by Meaghan Igel
