IN 2000, THE BEST-FRIEND DUO They Might Be Giants gained momentum after producing and writing the soundtrack for the hit television show, “Malcolm in the Middle.” The theme song, “Boss of Me,” took the band to new heights, as it not only gained national attention, but a Grammy as well. Though what many fans may not

realize is that the nerd-rock duo is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. By the time “Boss of Me” was released, They Might Be Giants already had 20 years and nine albums under its belt. The band’s debut album – 1986’s They Might Be Giants – was a hit in the college radio circuit; possibly prompting choruses of “I liked them when…” once “Malcolm in the Middle” hit the airwaves. Always offbeat, the band has done many left-of-center things such as record songs on an answering machine and write an entire album (Apollo 18) based on the band being named Music Ambassadors for International Space Year. They Might Be Giants continued on with its quirky ways when it released three children’s albums between 2005 and 2009. Currently, the band is on tour to not only promote its 30th anniversary, but its most recent album, Join Us – a non-children’s album that was released this past summer.
