Kindergarten SURVIVAL GUIDE for Parents

Most of us remember how nervous we were on our first day of kindergarten. Fast forward to our child's first day, and the anxiety is STILL there. Now that you're in the throes of elementary education, here are a few tips to continue that love for school.

SURVIVING THE CAR PICKUP LINE

If you haven't noticed yet ... car line is quite possibly one of the biggest time- sucks of your life. It's right along the lines of standing in line at the DMV. It's horrible, there's no getting around it, and it is as efficient as it is ever going to get. I've learned the best thing to do is try to pull an Oprah, and be thankful for the time that's been given to you and catch up on the following:

• A phone call to an old friend. Now you actually have time to call and catch up with at least one person per day. (Just make sure to end the call once the line starts moving. There's a strict "no cell phone" policy, and you don't want to be sent to the principal's office so early in the year!)

• Update your iPhone Apps. You know you've been letting those update reminders just sit there. Go ahead and see what the newest version of Instagram will bring.

• Read a book. You'll see lots of people doing this. Just don't be "that car" that forgets to look up and has let 150 feet of space get between your car and the one ahead of you.

• Listen to NPR (National Public Radio, for those of you who are WAY out of touch). You are now old enough to actually appreciate this great radio programming, so give it a whirl, and be better at dinner table conversations on current events.

• Re-teach yourself how to breathe. Apparently, we are ALL doing it wrong. Buy a new age CD that walks you through the steps of learning to breathe correctly. It's actually very relaxing — and as close to a spa experience as you're going to get in your swagger wagon.

IF YOU

FORGOT TO

CHARGE YOUR

CAMERAS

With all the organizing, shopping and preparing, it's easy to forget to charge the camera and video camera. If your paparazzi career was a bust on that first day, don't fret. Consider doing a fun after-school interview now: Ask your little scholar on video camera what his first day was like. Ask questions, such as, "What was your favorite thing in your lunch box?" "What are your new friends' names?" and "What games do you play on the playground?" Whether it was day one or day 20, kindergarteners are always cute. Plus, it will be a great keepsake for the high school graduation party!
