objective of the meeting was to consider the report on India’s water challenge based on the outcome of the World Economic Forum at Davos this year spearheaded by ADB. Thapan indicated the prospects of joint work supporting Government agencies and other water related organizations to look at critically future scenarios and options. ADB subsequently organised a conference on “India Water Dialogue” on 8 July 2010 which was attended by Secretary General. He made special contributions on “Water Use Efficiency in Agriculture” wherein ICID’s WatSave Awards, related issues concerning efficiency’ were also highlighted.
Secretary General had very useful discussions with Arjun Thapan on 13 January 2011 during his visit to Delhi. One relates to the ‘Way
forward on the Intensification of Irrigation and Drainage Research to achieve Global Food Security’. The other key item relates to ‘Broad basing of ICID membership’. This inter-alia, covered ICID’s fresh efforts to invigorate the Intensification of Research and Development in Irrigation and Drainage Sector involving its NCs. Thapan informed about ADB’s efforts to promote better water management in the region and the new initiative through Global Water Resources Group. Preliminary discussions were held on the scope for cooperation in the Research and Development. ADB’s enthusiasm to see ICID’s renewed efforts in promoting innovations in water savings was apparent during mutual exchanges. More discussions on these were agreed to for future.
Global Water partnership (GWp)
It is ICID’s pride that Vice President Hon. Mohamed Ait Kadi, President of the General Council of Agricultural Development in Morocco took over GWP’s Technical Chairmanship. His new assignment shall cement the ICID and GWP relationship given his strong connections with both the organizations.
GWP extended an invitation to ICID President and Secretary General to join their efforts together with IWMI in a Workshop on “Climate Change, Food and Water Security’ to identify critical issues. Exploring a few cooperative strategies given the increased risk and uncertainty that South Asia is likely to face was the agenda. Honouring the invitation, Secretary General Gopalakrishnan attended the events held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 24-25 February 2011 and introduced ICID’s own initiatives to face the challenges. Several Researchers and scholars from Asian region and outside assembled during the occasion. ICID was an invitee. The sessions concluded with a message “No more business as usual” in the face of climate change and food security concerns.

ICID was also invited to attend GWP side event on “Water, Adaptation and Development” held in Bonn, Germany on 7 June 2010 to present the outcomes of the dialogues, discuss how to accelerate progress on adaptation, and suggest how global action can be mobilized through current frameworks. German National Committee (GECID) was requested to represent ICID.
China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR)
Upon invitation from Chinese National Committee (CNCID), President Prof. Chandra Madramootoo visited the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) in 6-13 May 2010. He was accompanied by Vice President Hon. Karim Shiati, Chair of the Asian Regional Working Group (ASRWG), and the visit was facilitated by Vice President Hon. Gao Zhanyi. President Kuang Shangfu of the IWHR and members of CNCID were most hospitable and ensured that the visit was fruitful. In addition to formal meetings and presentations in Beijing, a visit to the Shijin Irrigation District in Hebei province, as well as the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai was also organized.
