only save water but also require less labor, due to high level of automation. The size of these machines varies and covers an area from 2 ha to 50 ha. The study tour was hosted and organized by six major hose reel manufacturing companies of Italy, viz. OCMIS, IRTEC, SIME, RM Irrigation, GIAMPI, and FERBO/ IDROFOGLIA.

Korean National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (KCID) held meeting with the Secretary General M. Gopalakrishnan, ICID during his visit to Saemangeum Seadyke Completion ceremony in April 2010. He also discussed about the draft of the publication ‘Handbook on Sustainable Development of Tidal Areas’. The Secretary General also met Hong Moon-pyo, Chairman, KCID and President, Korea Rural Community & Agricultural Corporation (KRC); Dr. Sang-Hyun, Park, Chairman, WG-SDTA; Dr. Jin-Hoon JO, Secretary General, KCID and Dr. Young D. Kim, VPH Yoo Man Huh, Technical Director Saemangeum Sea Dyke Management; Dr. Sang Hyun Park; and Prof. Kwong Sao Park, amongst others.

Secretary General visited Putrajaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 1 April 2010 to interact with MANCID Chairman VPH Ir. Mohd. Azhari bin Ghazalli and other Office Bearers. PH Keizrul bin Abdullah was a Special Guest during the occasion. MANCID’s new composition, after broad basing of their Committee including industry, academia and Government officials was highlighted. The Secretary general also informed about his joining the Hydropower & Dams Conference in Kucing where the topic of water resources development was debated.


On 25 May 2010, MANCID held extraordinary meeting (EGM) as proposed by the Executive Committee members. The agenda of the EGM was to get approval of members to allow MANCID to expand its own assets and finances to continue promoting activities or development of knowledge on irrigation and drainage based on constitutional objectives. In order to promote knowledge dissemination, MANCID also organized a technical talk and a technical discussion on ‘Besut Barrage Project at Terengganu’ by C. M. Lee, Project Director of Ranhill Berhad.


A meeting of the Young Professional Forum (YPF) was held on 10 August 2010 at the Division of Irrigation and Agricultural Drainage, Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry

During the meeting, new members of YPF were elected viz. Ms. Hayati bt Zainal as Chairman; Ms. Ir. Norlida bt Mamad Samad as Vice Chairman; Ms. Siti Rokiah Ibrahim as Secretary; and Ahmad Zaki bin Md Ali as Treasurer. Dr. Mohammud Che Husain of Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) delivered a talk on


“Controlled Environment Farming: The way forward”.
