Former OSHA Workplace Violence Prevention Coordinator Forms Alliance Against Workplace Violence
Violence is the third leading cause of death in the workplace. Although homicides in the workplace have declined significantly from a high of 1,080 in 1994 to 542 in 2009, any killing in the workplace is too high a price to pay to make a living. Recent headlines show that it has, by no means, disappeared from the workplace in spite of fewer homicides over the last 10 years. There was actually an increase in homicide in the workplace from 2008-2009. Patricia D. Biles, the former Workplace Violence Prevention Coordinator for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), announces the formation of a new alliance to provide education for the prevention of violence in the workplace. Employers, employees, victims’ advocates, union activists, and the government have worked collaboratively for almost two decades to bring the homicide rate down. Similar progress has been made in reducing the number of nonfatal injuries due to violence in the workplace. According to Biles, “If we are to see continued progress made in this area, we need to continue to bring attention to this issue.”
The Alliance Against Workplace Violence (AAWPV) was created by Biles to stimulate on-going discussion and generate new ideas about preventing violence in the workplace among those who are already working diligently in this field (businesses, unions and employees) and to include persons in the community who may have little awareness of the scope and magnitude of the problem. Comprised of leading consultants and advocates in workplace violence prevention, the Alliance has brought together some of the best minds to spearhead the discussion.
Consultants and practitioners in workplace violence prevention have joined together in a collaborative effort to bring information to schools, churches, community associations, Chambers of Commerce, and violence prevention organizations. We realize that violence in homes and communities often spills over into the workplace. The workplace is a microcosm of what happens in the community. Therefore, there are lessons to be learned by parties on both sides.
Social media as well as traditional outlets for information-sharing will be utilized to build a community of collaboration in keeping violence out of workplaces. The Alliance will be publishing the first book of a series called Halting the Violence on August 31 and it will be available for sale on
amazon.com as well as several other distribution outlets.
