Disgruntled Employee Wreaks IT Havoc at Japanese Drug Company


A disgruntled IT administrator attacks on Shionogi’s computer systems were severe enough to freeze Shionogi's operations for "a number of days and estimated damages were $800,000 once again illustrating the persistent danger of insider threats.


A former IT professional at the United States subsidiary of Japanese pharmaceutical firm Shionogi pleaded guilty on Aug. 16 to charges of computer intrusion. Cornish left the firm in July 2010 after a dispute with a senior manager, but at the suggestion of a colleague, continued working for Shionogi as a contractor because of his familiarity with the company's network. Cornish's contract was terminated during a subsequent round of layoffs, and he was no longer authorized to access Shionogi's network.


In January, Cornish managed to install VMWare'sVSphere virtualization management console software without the company's consent or knowledge. On Feb. 13, Cornish logged into the network and used the VSphere software to delete the contents of 15 virtual hosts, roughly equivalent to 88 different computer servers, according to the complaint.

What if a 3 to 6% of corporate employees were responsible for a major share of corporate crime and ethical breaches? If so, then developing policies that target them would improve the firm’s performance, not to mention its ethical climate. In this article I claim that psychopathic employees constitute such a subset, and I suggest human resource policies that can help firms cope with them.


Traditional management theories overlook the underlying pattern that psychopathic employees pose. The most influential model of workplace dishonesty is in Donald R. Cresey’sOther Peoples’ Money. His model of workplace theft focuses on employees who occupy fiduciary roles and are motivated to embezzle by a lapse in conduct (e.g., drug addiction). Only 1 % of the population is psychopathic. Furthermore, corporate psychopathy tends to be concentrated at the higher levels of organizations. In his book Without Conscience, Hare points out that the symptoms of white collar psychopaths differ from those of the more general syndrome. If employees make comments perceived as being violent and violate the employers’ workplace violence policy in response to the introduction of a new break policy can the employer terminate the employees?


The Situation


In Kiewit Power Constructors Co. v. NLRB, heard by the U.S Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. several employees made comments in response to a threatened new disciplinary measure proposed by their employer concerning a change in the company’s break policy. One employee stated “that things would get ugly if they were disciplined,” and another said “that his supervisor had better bring [his] boxing gloves.”


The employer terminated the employees for violating the company’s zero tolerance workplace violence policy.

Employers And Businesses Get Ready For Wisconsin’s New Concealed Carry Law


Wisconsin will soon become the 49th state to allow individuals to carry concealed weapons. The new lawimpacts whether and how employers and businesses can prohibit weapons at work and on their property. The bill is expected to be sign by Gov. Scott Walker’s.


Under the new legislation, residents 21 years and older can carry a concealed weapon anywhere in the state, with only a few limited exceptions. Concealed weapons will still be banned in schools, police stations, sheriff’s offices, prisons or jails, courthouses, and government offices that have electronic screening devices and in airports beyond security checkpoints.


The licenses to carry concealed weapons, is subject to a background check. Applicants can only be denied if they are prohibited from carrying a gun by state law (typically if they are a convicted felon), federal law or if they are not a resident of the State.
