MERCURY RETROGRADE – A TRIP TO THE UNCONSCIOUS
Mercury retrograde and its disruptive effects have become firmly entrenched in the astrological ‘hall of fame’ alongside the expectation of weird behaviour and long queues at ‘accident and emergency’ at the full moon or the belief that Scorpios are obsessed with sex and Geminis are shallow. Well there’s always a grain of truth in these clichés and Mercury retrograde can certainly bring car trouble, computer crashes and other types of mayhem, but let’s look at why this happens and what we can learn from the Mercury retrograde transit.
Mercury goes retrograde (travels backwards through the zodiac from our earthly point of view) every four months for approximately three weeks each time. The last cycle ran from 3rd-27th August and the next one will run from late November to mid December. Traditionally, the retrogression of a planet has been seen as negative, but the natural introspective and inner experience it creates is one way we can learn about our dark or shadow side. The process of insemination and active waiting – putting an idea or plan on the back burner for incubation and maturation – is a feature of all retrograde cycles.
Mercury (or Hermes in Greek mythology)
was the messenger of the gods and is credited with the invention of language. He was the only god to be able to travel to the underworld and back at will, symbolising the ability to connect conscious and unconscious mind. As Mercury rules over transitional space, boundaries and crossroads, his influence can be felt in all retrograde cycles, which are really cycles of passage. Mercury is considered by some astrologers
to be the most important planet in the horoscope since it is through Mercury that we create and disseminate our thoughts. A keyword for Mercury travelling in direct
motion is ‘attention’ whereas Mercury retrograde is signified by ‘awareness’. The natural rhythm of the cycle allows for both to be incorporated into our lives, but the difficulty lies in our unwillingness to accept the retrograde phase as a teaching device. During stages of personal transition or growth, Mercury always appears with messages from the unconscious and, during the Mercury retrograde cycle, our perceptions often shift drastically as we receive new information. Any piece of news or insight that surfaces is completely relevant to our needs, even if the message is surprising, challenging or painful. This
