one with myself and the world. And when I made time for silence I was then able to carry the essence of this profound silence with me into the busy city streets, into meetings at work, into gatherings with friends and thus neutralise the effects of the noise and stress I encountered there. It was after these experiences that my
husband and I returned to the deserts of Utah and Colorado. We had been there previously and had been moved by the utter sacredness of these places. On this journey what spoke to me most was the depth of silence to be found there. So profound was the silence that it felt like I was entering the very heart of the Divine Presence. This is not something one says lightly, but there the silence was like no other. There was a depth of silence so sacred, so profound, that it took me far beyond my everyday self, linking me with that which is greater, far greater than the individual I. In this silence was love beyond all
imagining. There too lay the great wisdom and power of the universe. There resided the great I AM of creation that defies explanation, that just is. There was the balm that we who have become so fragmented crave for. Within this silence lay that which is at the essence of who we all are. There in the blessed silence of this vast space I felt closer to the Divine than I had felt in a very long time. In the midst of this silence everything
we need to know becomes apparent to us. Within the silence I felt whole. I knew who I was without any thought or need to question. I knew myself to be an integral part of the sacred web of being. When we journey deep into the silence
we embark upon one of the most awesome journeys, because there we are able to stand in the centre of who we are, and as we do so all our freneticism, all our misconceptions drop away. Day after day as I was bathed in that silence I realised that I was in the presence of the great teacher, and I came to realise that the whisper of the Divine Presence is but a heartbeat
away, if we can but surrender our constant need to prove, to control, to analyse. When we returned to everyday life,
then more than ever I could see and feel the effects that sound has on us. My heart sank as I watched people in restaurants and cafes glued to television, hooked into the thousands upon thousands of messages that washed over them hourly. I watched parents sit down to eat with their children without even a word being exchanged between them. Too absorbed were they in their viewing to talk with each other, let alone to be genuinely with each other. As I observed all this going on around
me, it was as if I was watching fellow human beings under an enchantment so deep that they were no longer able to experience anything other than the most basic of life’s functions of eating and sleeping and working. And then I remembered how easy it was to come home to an empty house and put on the television. I remembered how often we use background noise to keep disquieting thoughts at bay. The reasons for this are understandable, but how can we relate to one another, to the Divine, if we do not make space in our lives, in our heads for the words we need to hear, let alone all we need to learn or understand? In spite of everything we might think
or fear the practice of silence is not about living a life that is in any way diminished, but about enriching our life experience so that it has more value, more nuance and texture, more beauty, more mystery and more piquancy.
