submitted by Jon MacLean, Windham Wolverines Youth Football and Cheer On the eve of its inaugural season, the

Windham Youth Football and Cheer program is being recognized by the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association (NHIAA). Executive Director, R. Patrick Corbin is giving the Wolverines high marks for being a well-run program and for providing a positive environment for its athletes. Corbin says, “All too often sports programs are coached by untrained, albeit well-meaning folks who can do irreparable harm to young athletes. I have watched several practices and have been very impressed with how this program is evolving.” The Wolverines started practices on August 1st with 84 youngsters and despite a rigorous practice schedule all 84 players continue to participate in the program. Corbin continued, “All the young people are treated appropriately from what I have observed. The coaches continue to exhibit great patience and a positive attitude with the players and among themselves.” “We are truly honored to have the NHIAA recognize us in this way,” says Wolverines’ President, Jim Williams. “This is certainly confirmation that all our hard work is paying off.” That hard work is exactly what the Wolverines took to the field this past weekend at the Laconia Youth Football Jamboree. The fourth and fifth grade combined team capitalized on its air and ground attacks. Running back Robbie Furman had two 30-yard touchdown runs and QB Jonny “Mac” MacLean ran in two 10-yard TDs. Maclean also hooked up with tight end Hunter Delaney for a dramatic last second 30-yard touchdown pass. The sixth grade team put on an offensive show

teams turned some heads as they played with focus, energy, and poise. Windham matched up against teams from

Franklin, Laconia, Plymouth, Concord, and North Country. Each team in the tournament played four 20-minute games and despite the 90-degree heat, the newcomers didn’t waiver.

team was very impressive denying all of its opponents any trips to the end zone. Tommy McNeal and Keegan Parke sparked the defense with an outstanding rush. On the offensive side of the ball, Joey DaSilva and Curtis Shattuck showed off their speed and scored multiple touchdowns.

of its own. Quarterback Jake Byers was on fire. Byers connected on several passes with multiple receivers including two 20-yard TD tosses to receiver James Williams. The running game was not to be outdone by the passing attack. Running backs Max Faro and Joe Dunlap each blazed down the field with 40-yard trips to the end zone. Zack Swarbrick also scampered in for a score with a four-yard run. Defensively, Eric Thibadeau stripped the ball from an opposing running back and Jude Donabedian played “deny-defense” by making several impressive tackles at the corner. Tommy Costa added to the defensive effort with an interception. This weekend the Wolverines travel to various

away games for the program’s first-ever series of contests. “I’m really proud of the incredible effort our players and coaches have made to get ready for the season,” said Kyle McInnis, VP and Director of Football Operations. “There’s still work to be done both on and off the field, but I’m confident our players will be well-prepared for Sunday.”

effort. “We’re approaching the season like every other team this year,” Windham soccer coach Mike Hachey said. “We want to get ourselves in good position for the playoffs. We learned a lot from last year and we’re going to use it for this season.” Windham compiled a record of 6-8-2 in 2010, but some of those losses were ones that slipped away toward the end of games. The fact that the Jags now have some experience with 16 players returning should help their execution in the final minutes. “We have everyone back and they know what to expect this year,” Hachey said. “Coming into games and knowing what to expect, guys will be able to just focus on playing.” Eighteen players make up the varsity roster for

by Chris White Over the first two years of its existence, the

Windham High boys’ soccer program has been steadily building a strong foundation. Without any seniors in the program, the Jaguars had success at the junior varsity level in 2009 and then made the Division 2 playoffs in their first season of varsity competition last fall. Now entering year three, the Jaguars are looking to take the next step and improve on last year’s

Windham heading into the new season. The team will be led by four seniors - Anthony Capozzi, Brandon Swift, Mike DiOrio, and Steve Dastous - and four junior captains - Chris Ulbrich, Alex Whitehead, Andrew Pesci, and Mike Sheahan. The squad is still relatively young compared to a lot of teams in the state, but this year the Jags seem to be a lot more physical, quicker, and organized in practice. “The guys on this team just want to show that they can compete,” Hachey said. “They take a lot of pride in being part of a team that’s establishing a tradition.” This season, the Jaguars will try to improve on an opening round loss to third-seeded Souhegan in last year’s tournament. Windham will have its first game of the 2011 season at home today against Manchester West at 4 p.m.

Luciano Memorial Golf Tournament

by Marc Ayotte Friends and family members turned out in large numbers on Monday, August 22, for the fourth annual Tony Luciano Memorial Golf Tournament. The event gave supporters a chance to get together at Meadow Creek Golf Club, in Dracut, MA, to enjoy a round of golf and more importantly celebrate the memory of Tony Luciano. The long-time member of the Crossroads Church in Pelham passed away suddenly on March 1, 2008 at the still young age of 44. Tony was adored and loved for his passion for life and willingness to help others. He is especially remembered for his infectious smile, great sense of humor and commitment to all who were blessed to have made his acquaintance. Living his life with family and faith being of utmost importance, he was passionately involved with his children’s’ lives and activities. Epitomizing the character of Luciano were words depicted on a poster, promoting the fund raising event; “his energy, spirit and laughter were contagious which naturally drew people to him, continuing to expand his “inner circle” and demonstrating to his children how to approach life with an open heart.” As Cindy Kyzer, a friend of the Luciano family and wife of Crossroads Church pastor Matt Kyzer, commented, “he was very outgoing, everyone who met him, loved him.” His wife, Cheri, recalled Tony’s involvement with community sports, also noting he was very active in his church where “he was a small group leader and taught children’s’ church.” In response to the wonderful turnout at the fundraiser for Tony, Mrs. Luciano said it was touching to see so many of his friends “keeping his memory and spirit alive.” The day-long event started at 7:30 in the morning with breakfast and then proceeded to the scramble format, shotgun start tournament,

an hour later. After the round of golf on a track carved out of the Dracut woods, all the participants were treated to a sit-down, buffet style dinner that featured London broil tips, b-b-q chicken, potatoes and salad. In addition, a silent auction, live auction, and raffle were conducted after dinner. Prizes and awards were given out for low net score by a foursome, closest to the pin and for the longest drive, which was won by Corey Couillard. Many of the items available at the silent auction were Red Sox and Bruins memorabilia with a one-night stay at the Wyndam Andover Hotel and On the Bone Gift Certificate leading the way.
