CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2010 - 2011 By Chairman: Paul Lindsay
The Society has come to the end of another year a little bit better off (as the Treasurer will elucidate) and richer also in terms of the number of members and their interests. During this last season we have had one programme from Naxos, and 15 others from presenters far and wide. Also during the last year we were very fortunate to have a second presentation by Trevor Hampton and Jean Gribble on George Bernard Shaw, which was well received by those attending. I spoke at the beginning of a small profit, financially. This was largely due to the Bedford Hotel not charging for the two occasions we had to cancel in November/December. However I regret to inform members that the hotel has raised the Room Charge, which means that from next season your committee has recommended an increase in the Annual subscription rate to £12. This is the first rise in the Subscription rate since 2004, so I think that the Society has been more than cautious about raising this rate. At the time that the Room Charge is increasing I regret to have to inform members of a further rise in the cost of coffee to £1.75. This is still cheaper than you would have to pay in the hotel (by 75p), and we do not have the resources to absorb the increase.
Although we have garnered a number of new members this last season, I feel that without new members, we shall either be forced to look elsewhere to meet, or we shall simply have to close. We have a few years in hand, but I should like everyone to think of somebody that they know who, for instance, listens to Classic FM. Our meetings are not so different, except that we have no adverts! We have the presenters, we have the music – sometimes part of a whole work, sometimes the whole thing. Our list of presenters is not the regular weekly folk one gets on the radio, but changes over a period of a couple of years or more. The next season promises to be an exiting one, not just the programmes, but the fact that it will mark twenty-
five years of existence of TRMS. A special event is now being planned, about which I shall be able to tell you more nearer the time (March 2012)
