A LYDFORD LAMENT
The onions were springing, the bluebells were ringing, The starfish shone bright in the sky, When high on a peak a maiden so meek Near Tavistock I did espy.
A shawl of black lace nigh enveloped her face And all I could see was one eye;
But the maiden so meek had a tear on her cheek – In fact she was starting to cry.
“Young maid,” I enquired, “Just what has transpired to make you so glum and so sad?” “I mourn,” she replied, “for my two loves that died, my Ted and my young Lydford lad.
My Tavistock Ted has a hole in his head, My young Lydford lad is interred, Because I had tried from each one to hide Just which of the two I preferred.
They proposed every night and they each held me tight, Oh, never a one could I lose! And, truly to tell, they might each do as well, I never knew which one to choose.
Most loving is folly; but oh it was jolly To think that we three were two pairs, Until on that night when they started to fight And left me alone with my cares.
That Tavistock cad hit my young Lydford lad In the stomach, the back and the eye. He knocked in his teeth, then ordered a wreath. I could see he was going to die.
He fell to the ground with an audible sound. You might say ‘to die he was prone’; But he asked Ted in mime ‘can you tell me the time?’
Then opened his head with a stone.
And that was the end, oh my dear stranger friend, Of the double love we three had shared. “Oh, never confuse or have lovers in queues,” The maiden meek sadly declared.
The onions have sprung, the bluebells have rung, No starfish illumine the sky,
And high on that peak there’s no maiden so meek. We’re married , the maiden and I!
