Face first

Your skin begins to lose its natural elasticity after your mid twenties, but the good news is that there are now numerous treatments available to help you maintain a youthful-looking complexion. Mandy Temple talks to local experts

Every time you use a muscle in your face, whether you’re smiling or frowning, you'll see a wrinkle appear. Sun damage, smoking and poor diet also play a part in how your skin looks, so it’s extremely important to take care of yourself if you don’t want to see the consequences reflected in your face in later life!

Dermal Fillers If you are very conscious of your wrinkles or have permanent scars that you wish had a more subtle appearance, you may want to consider dermal-filler treatment. Frequently used for correcting these sorts of problems, it’s synthetic, non-invasive, and requires very little recovery time. It can be used to target a variety of areas including the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes and acne pitting, and it can even be used for lip enhancement. “A local anaesthetic cream is applied before the filler is injected into the area being treated,” says Melissa Ballard, Clinic Manager at Stradbrook Skin (01732

771402).“Depending on which filler is used and in which area, the effect can last for as long as between six and eighteen months.”

There are lots of contributing factors to premature ageing, but according to Cindy Knight, RCN Aesthetic Practitioner and co- owner with Diana Knight of Cindy Knight Clinic (01732 832004), sun damage is the main culprit. ”Many women now in their 50s and 60s are covered in wrinkles because they were never warned of the potential consequences of sun damage,” she says. “We use a new filler machine that offers advantages including fewer side effects and less pain.” Dermal fillers cost from around £260.

the texture of the facial skin, a chemical peel uses a chemical solution that causes dead skin to eventually peel off, helping to regenerate your skin’s appearance. A facial peel can be used on almost any skin type, but remember it’s extremely important to seek advice from a professional such as a dermatologist, registered nurse or a plastic surgeon.
