INDEX news

what’s caught our eye this month Editor’s Eye

What constitutes a milestone for you? A special birthday? Getting married? Buying your first home? Whatever, we’ve got plenty of advice on how best to mark it in this issue, with our lead feature on local ways to celebrate, plus our Weddings special. If you’re looking for a great way to spend a weekend locally, meanwhile, don’t miss our piece on Folkestone – there’s still time to explore the delights of its Triennial arts festival and you can sample its latest fish & chip shop while you’re at it! Finally – and emphatically – we’d really

like to hear what you think of Index. That’s why we’ve commissioned our first Reader Survey in five years – give us your feedback and you could win a fantastic make-over at The Chapel for yourself or a friend. What more incentive do you need?!

The Editor Farming triumph for John Boyd

John Boyd (Farms) Ltd was the winner of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) Emsden Trophy for 2011 at July’s Kent County Show. Farming at John Boyd (Farms) is based on combinable crops, planted in a rotation of wheat and oilseed rape. The Boyds also manage about 33 hectares of chalk grassland that is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on the scarp of the

North Downs, forming part of a larger SSSI area that includes 72 hectares of woodland. The Pilgrim’s Way crosses the farm, and the scarp at Hollingbourne, nearly 200 metres above sea level, is in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and gives extensive views over the Weald. The family also owns and maintains the magnificent tithe barn at Lenham.
