INDEX news September NEWS:
Charity of the Month: Rockdale, Sevenoaks
As a charity, Rockdale aims to support the elderly in society who can least afford the care fees that are charged by profit-making organisations. Rockdale keeps its services affordable in every way possible. Its Board of Trustees is staffed entirely on a voluntary basis, while volunteers run its art club, the computer club, the mobile shop in Rockdale House – the list goes on…
The existing care home was established in1953 and financed entirely by funds raised from benefactors within the Sevenoaks community. With this ageing building being replaced, the charity plans to take a self-funding approach – and has almost gathered the necessary finance to do this. Says Fundraising
Officer, Marian Wright, ““The total cost to Rockdale of the entire building project will be some £5.6 million. In the first instance, thorough careful management of assets and liabilities, Rockdale has accumulated significant financial reserves over the years, and this takes us a good step towards our required financing. Cost control over day-to- day expenditure is a key focus of management.”
The Rockdale Appeal aims to raise £1.75 million towards the project from charitable donations, and it’s still £180,000 to go. If you can help in any way, please contact the Fundraising Office at Rockdale on 01732 458762, or see

Wonderland picnic a summer treat
Of open doors and
turning sweeps Heritage Open Days, which run from 8 to 11 September, celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors, and in our area these range from private homes (such as beautiful Holden House in Southborough, a runner-up in Britain’s Best Home competition and shown above left) to quirky buildings such as Tunbridge Wells’ animal pound. There’ll be guided walks, too – Index editor Anna Lambert plans to lead one on Historic Shops in Tunbridge Wells on Thursday, 8 September.

And while we’re on the subject of heritage, you can’t fault locals in Argos Hill, who’re making impressive efforts to raise £100K to secure the restoration of the hamlet’s much-loved windmill (above, right – shown prior to work): Grade 2* listed, dating from 1835 and a landmark for miles around. To see details of progress in getting the Argos Hill sweeps turning again, news of upcoming fund-raising events (look out for details of a sponsored walk through beautiful Wadhurst Park on Sunday 4 Sept, while the Big Band night on Saturday 8 October sounds fun) and ways in which you can get involved, see

Fans of Mad Hatters Fancy Dress in Bodiam enjoyed a recent Sunday pottering in the extensive grounds that surround the rurally- based business. They were greeted by characters from Alice In Wonderland, and had the chance to have a good look through the hire shop’s vast collection of outfits. Says owner Jennifer Barlow, “It was a lovely, quirky day out and everyone seemed to have a great time.”
