letterfrompublisher How do you like to express yourself? I’m a word person.
(I know, surprising right, considering what I do.) I think words are magical whether they are spoken, written, read or heard. They can be used to write or sing the lyrics for a song, or pass down history to our children, or makeup a movie world where our all of our dreams are possible, or even create “wordart” on canvas. Of course words can hurt and be misunderstood. But they

can also take you to far away places or so close within to your own unexplored heartland. And I’m always amazed at how
the same exact words can convey different meanings depending on the person that is experiencing them. Just ask a group of children how the lamp was broken? I’m still hoping that I inherited some “sewing” genes from my mother and
grandmother. They were both skilled seamstress and could make almost anything from a few yards of cloth. My aunt did pass down one of her old sewing machines to me and it has been calling me lately. I’m not even sure if it still works but it would feel good to express myself by making some of my own clothing using eco- friendly fabric. For this issue, we did call the fabric stores in our area and sadly did not find one that is stocked with any earth-friendly fabrics, like the ones on page 24. Hopefully, that will change soon—or if you know of one, please let us know. Of course, consignment shops are a great source for clothing that can be recycled into modern wear or bring back a bygone fashion. Is it September that is stirring my yearning to create? Or is the heat creating a desire for entertainment in a nice air-conditioned environment? Either way, I was inspired to finally move my “craft” cabinet from the garage (where it’s been for over 5 years) into the house. I haven’t created any masterpieces yet, but it was fun organizing all the paint, glue, shells, little treasures and hobby stuff while dream- ing about using it one day. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to go past the crayon or marker stage when it comes to expressing myself on paper or canvass. Music is another outlet for expressing myself that I often forget to enjoy. As a
little girl, I would listen to my parents’ favorite romantic songs by Elvis, Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. Then as my older sisters became teenagers, I discovered moving to the beat of the music. I would sneak in their room when they were out, put on a record and sing and dance for hours. Now I can go days without the pleasure of music. Fortunately, my husband really likes music. He’s the one to turn on the car radio. Or in the evenings, when it’s time to unwind and stop working, I get a signal by hearing some music playing—sometimes soft and romantic and other times tunes to make you get up and dance! I’ll leave you with some of lyrics from “Express Yourself!” by Charles Wright & Street Rhythm Band, an American soul & funk band from the 60’s
the Watts 103rd and early 70’s:
Express Yourself! You don’t ever need help from nobody else. All you got to do now: Express Yourself!
What ever you do, do it good. All right... It’s not what you look like, when you’re doin´ what you’re doin´. It’s what you’re doin´ when you’re doin´ what you look like you’re doin´! Express Yourself!
Have fun doing what you’re doin’,
