International students working during studies
If you are in the UK with student immigration permission for more than 6 months, you will be allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during semester-time and full-time during the holidays if your programme allows. Take a look at this factsheet for more information:
www.dundee.ac.uk/welcome/ workingandni. UKCISA also has further information on their website:
www.ukcisa.org.uk/student
National insurance number
Under UK Law, when you start work you will need a National Insurance (Nl) number. You do not need this to start working, but you must apply for one as soon as you receive the offer of a job. Further information is available at:
www.nases.org.uk/students
Employment and the national minimum wage
You should be receiving at least the minimum wage. It is intended to provide employees with decent minimum standards and fairness in the work place. It applies even if you are in training or are receiving tips. More information is available here:
www.hmrc.gov.uk/students. Be wary of accepting ‘cash in hand’. Wages are normally paid directly into your bank account and you should receive a proper pay slip.
