LANGLEY HERD OPEN DAY D
ozens of British Friesian enthusiasts gathered in early July at John Carnell and family’s Langley herd near Leighton Buzzard for an Open Day. The herd was founded in 1971 and now numbers 300 head with a predicted average for this year of 8090 kg at 3.86% fat and 3.29% protein. The milking herd averaged 25 litres at 4.29% fat and 3.24% protein at the last recording.
The herd received a boost in 1987 with the introduction of a number of influential families through some
careful purchases. CBS May 5, Stardale Vaakje 10, CBS Ethel, CBS Blanche, Rybeck Marion, Huntholme Marlene and Darleymoor Blossom were selected with advice from David Ward of Cow Breeders. The impact of these families is still being felt today, and the herd currently boasts 57 EX and 118 VG animals, with 47 cows over 50 tonnes and two having reached 100 tonnes. The Langley herd is a family-run venture; John and his wife Gina are assisted by their two sons Michael and Neil, daughter in law Miranda and grand daughter Elizabeth, with whom John has introduced a few Jerseys for her to show.
The cows are cubicle and loose housed, milked twice a day through a 16:16 herringbone and are split in two groups, of high and low yielders. In addition to grazing, the herd receives a TMR consisting of grass and maize silage, brewers’ grains, citrus pulp, sugar beet pulp, milled bread and High Pro soya. This is topped up to yield in the parlour.
The Club are very grateful to John, Gina and all their family for opening up their farm and for providing an excellent barbecued lamb with salads and puddings for lunch.
