The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Tanks to Our Many Sponsors and Supporters

Jimmy Fund Golf extends its sincerest thanks to the

organizers and sponsors of the Ciampa Cup in Memory of Lauren Ciampa held on July 29, at Windham Country Club in Windham. Special recognition and appreciation goes to David Castellano of Burlington, MA, who organized the second annual event. Te dedicated sponsors, participants, and volunteers helped raise critical funds to support lifesaving cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Te Ciampa Cup in Memory of Lauren Ciampa was one of the many golf tournaments that will be held in 2011 to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund and Dana- Farber. American Airlines, Callaway Golf, Dunkin’ Donuts, Forty Seven Brand, GateHouse Media New England, the International Golf Club, and HomeGoods are the presenting sponsors for Jimmy Fund Golf. From traditional golf tournaments and country club member events to mini-golf tournaments and all day golf marathons, volunteers create golf fundraisers that combine their love of the sport with their desire to support the fight against cancer. Each event is an incredibly rewarding and fun way to support a great cause! Tose interested in finding out ways to support Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund through golf may visit www.jimmyfundgolf.org or call (866) 521-4653 to learn how.

Corey was five, and as each year has passed since then I have become more appreciative of his development - not only regarding his skills as a player, but more importantly as a person. His self-esteem, confidence and self-respect have grown enormously with each season that he has participated in their programs - and this year is no exception. Corey just finished up his second season in the

WBSL’s Jimmy Fund program, which is a special summer program for 9 and 10 year old players. In- between playing games, the players on each team raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in its fight against cancer. Te support and encouragement of Scott Mueller,

A Special Letter of Tanks to the Windham Baseball Softball League

Some might think that Little League baseball is just an activity to get the kids out of the house for a few hours, but the Windham Baseball Softball League (WBSL) board approaches their responsibilities with much higher aspirations. Tey understand the implications of their actions - and how their decisions impact our children both on and off the field. My son’s involvement with the WBSL began when

President, and David Macary, Tournament Director, is outstanding. Together, with the rest of the board of directors, the league has provided an environment for our children to thrive. Phil Messina is another shining individual (among many) that is on the WBSL board and leads by example - as he made a significant financial contribution to the Jimmy Fund that was raised through his business and employees. With encouragement from the WBSL, many parents joined together to assist in the league wide fund raising effort for the Jimmy Fund. Many local businesses joined in as well, contributing over 40 gift certificates that were raffled off on Saturday, July 30. In addition to parents providing many hours of their time, some also contributed directly to the raffle prize pool. Keith Lord and Dave Macary donated tickets to a Red Sox game and Noreen Gallo a consult and dietary analysis. It’s the little things like this, that aren’t so little. It is what makes our community a special place to live and raise our children. Tis year, the Jimmy Fund players shattered last year’s league fund raising record by raising just under $16,700 ($3,000 more than last year’s record). Tis success provides a positive impact not only for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (the recipient of all money raised) - but also for our children. Tese positive, character building life lessons the

Jimmy Fund players have learned through their involvement with the WBSL will last a lifetime. My sincere thanks go out to the league, as well as all of the parents, players, businesses and community members that participated in this wonderful event.
