THE WHARF GALLERY
LOUISE COHEN - PAINTINGS Tuesday 30th August to Friday 23rd September
I started photographing Devon & Cornwall in 2001 when I moved to the village of Sticklepath in West Devon, and since 2007 have been exhibiting and displaying my work publically - with Dartmoor on my doorstep and the coast only a short journey away, as a photographer I have been spoilt for choice!
It’s a privilege to be surrounded by such diverse and natural beauty, and I continue to be inspired by the ruggedness ever changing moods of the area. In my images I aim to capture the essence of the mood as I experienced it, and to freeze that moment in a photograph for me to reflect back on, and for others to enjoy.
I particularly enjoy the soft light of the early morning hours and at dusk, when pastel colours produce moody atmospheres - also, capturing the dramatic contrast of colours and reflections seen under stormy skies, even though these lighting conditions are often challenging.
My images are produced as natural as possible, with minimal enhancements - what my eyes see is what I try and reflect back in my photographs.
A selection of my ever expanding work can also be found on my website -

ALFRED NUSSBAUM - PAINTINGS - DIASPORA Monday 26th September to Friday 28th October
Alfred Nussbaum was born into a Jewish family in Poland in 1919 and educated in Austria. Entering the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna in 1937, he spent his free time painting in the studio of a member of the Vienna Kunstakademie.
Forced to leave Austria in 1938, after its annexation by Germany, Alfred lived in Palestine for 10 years. He arrived in the UK as a refugee in 1948. Family members died in Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps. This had a major impact on his outlook on life, politics and religion, and art work.
Nussbaum qualified as an Art Teacher from the West of England College of Art and taught Art, and later Physics in Bristol.
Retirement from 1983 until his death in 2005 was devoted to painting, exhibiting most years at the West of England Academy and twice at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
Nussbaum’s art draws its inspiration from the works of Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Barth, and Soren Kirkegaard. The tragedy of the Holocaust; the New Testament; Socialism, science and mathematics demonstrate a powerful presence in his work.
This, the first exhibition of his collection, includes work in oils; acrylics; lino and wood cuts; watercolour and line drawings.

Steve Hackett Wharf Words PUNCH AND JUDY
What do you think of this punch, Judy? I’d say it’s rather fine I’ve put in sugar and fruit juice And lots of leftover wine.
Do try some of this punch, Judy It should be very nice But maybe somewhat bland? I’ll stir in a bit more spice
Have a glass of this punch, Judy Too sweet? Lemon makes it tart I’ll float slices on the top It looks quite a work of art
Try some more of this punch, Judy You think it rather thin? I’ll add a dash of brandy And top it up with gin
Don’t interfere with the punch, Judy Not vodka! That won’t do You’ve stirred it up and sunk the fruit It’s more like a witch’s brew
Now you’ll have to drink the punch, Judy It’s strong and making you frisky. Mmm, if I can get her to have too much Her behaviour becomes quite risqué.
