The growth of online video services means service providers can no longer ignore the threat from over-the-top services. Graham Pomphrey reports on the various options open to pay TV operators.

And ques- tions remain as to how open a service should be and the level of control operators should relinquish.


Pay TV platforms


In the UK, cable operator Virgin Media, with nearly four million customers, launched a connected TV service this year using technol- ogy from TiVo. The service combines live TV with catch-up TV, a large library of on-demand programming and web-based applications, including iPlayer, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, alongside a digital video recorder.
