Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts 2011 6 - 22 October
Elin Manahan Thomas
Looking for a respite from gloomy weather and the working week? Check out the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts where there is a full artistic mix in a packed programme of events from 6 - 22 October.
Renowned for bringing top-class orchestras to the City, there are visits from the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and our own BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conducted by the dynamic Yuri Simonov with violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky the Moscow Philharmonic’s programme includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, while the Royal Philharmonic, conducted by Thomas Dausgaard, perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in G with internationally celebrated violinist Tasmin Little. Thierry Fischer conducts BBC NOW’s concert, with pianist Stephen Osborne, featuring Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G and Stravinsky’s ever popular The Firebird.
Welsh National Opera bring a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni - one of the greatest of all operatic villains, and Rossini’s comic masterpiece The Barber of Seville featuring the hilarious Largo al factotum aria. Drama comes with Mappa Mundi performing Shakespeare’s popular comedy Much Ado About Nothing.
Early music fans have a treat in store with Swansea-born soprano Elin Manahan Thomas performing A Tribute to Vivaldi. More Welsh talent comes to the fore in a concert from the choir Cˆ
ordydd, with
soprano Ffl ur Wyn and cellist Steff an Morris, in a programme which also brings together the work of two contemporary composers, John Rutter and Paul Mealor - both of whom had their music featured
Steven Osborne
at the Royal Wedding this year, while Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams and Neath-born organist James Gough both give recitals.
There is ballet with the State Ballet Academy of Minsk performing The Nutcracker; dance from India with STEM Dance Company; top class jazz with Richard Rodney Bennett and Claire Martin; an organ recital from the exceptional Dame Gillian Weir and several varied and informative lectures.
Visual art exhibitions across the City are by LOCWS International and on site at the Mission Gallery (by Swansea-based artist Alex Duncan) and the Taliesin Arts Centre (by retired vicar of St Mary’s, Andrew Vessey), while at the National Waterfront Museum an exhibition illustrating the tragedy of the SS Arandora Star ties in with Simon Rees exploring The Patti Legend and her link with the ill-fated ship. Visit these exhibitions on the popular Art and Pasta Tour.
The Festival’s schools’ outreach project, in association with Tˆy Cerdd, is Sea Dogs which, following classwork in primary schools, ends in concerts of the new work with the RWCMD Symphonic Brass and Percussion Ensemble.
