by Marc Ayotte The Nashua Silver Knights, the local entry of the upstart Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) were recently crowned league champs, as they defeated Torrington (CT) in the best of three series, two games to none. As regular season champs, the Silver Knights had home field advantage and as a result, opened up the series at Holman Stadium in Nashua on Thursday night, August 4. Eric Perrault, got the starting nod from manager Mike Chambers. Pitching in front of a partisan crowd, Perrault took a no hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a weak single to the lead- off batter. The former Blue Devil went 7.1 innings, striking out 10 Titans, in picking up the 12-0 victory. “My arm felt really good warming up” recalled Perrault as he loosened up in the bullpen. “I was making sure my mechanics were fluid,” added 2008 Salem High School graduate. Perrault was recognized for two special individual achievements. League commissioner, Chris Hall presented the current Keene State College Owl with the League’s Top pitcher Award along with the Top Pro Prospect trophy. The six foot one inch southpaw was humbled, saying the awards were “both really nice honors (to receive). (The awards) opened my eyes and showed me that I have potential after college.” After successful seasons at Keene and for the Silver Knights, Perrault plans to give his arm some rest by relaxing until the fall, when he heads back to college for fall ball.

Another local standout made an appearance in the opening game of the series. Former Alvirne High School pitcher Travis Terrill made an impressive relief appearance, firing one and two-thirds scoreless innings, in preserving the home shutout. With the game well in hand for Nashua, it was a nice ‘home town’ decision by Silver Knights’ manager, Chambers, to call upon the local talented right-hander to close out the Titans. With his parents and grandparents in attendance, it was a great thrill for the 2010 Bronco graduate to pitch in front of a big championship series crowd. “The juices were flowing, especially with the game at Holman, (it was) a pretty cool opportunity,” commented the Merrimack

Bill Spencer Takes Home Top Honors in Masters Track and Field Meets

LAWS & DEMERS PLLC expires 9/30/11

Bill Spencer of Litchfield spent the month of July competing at both the national and world levels in Track and field Meets. Spencer was in two major National Masters Track and Field meets and at the World Masters Track and Field Championship. The month started at the National Senior Games in Houston, TX, where he won the 75 to 79 age group 1500 meter race, just missing the National games record by one second. The next day, he placed second in the 800 meter run where his time was the third fastest in meet history. Two weeks later he was off to Sacramento, CA, to compete against runners from all around the world. Competing on the 800 and 1500 events he was the first American in each race where he placed third in the 800 and fifth in the 1500. After a week back home, it was off to Cleveland, OH, for the USATF National Masters championship. At that meet, he won the 5000 meter race on the first day, finished fourth in the 800 with his fastest time of the year the next day and had a strong finish for second place in the 1500 the following day. His total for the month was two gold, two silver, and one bronze medals. Bill has been active in the running community for many years, in addition to his individual races. He maintains the NH State road racing records which are at www.nhrunning.com and has been coaching national level girls cross country teams for years. He is currently an assistant coach to the Bishop Guertin girls team, most of whom he had coached during their elementary and middle school years. When not involved with his running activities, he finds time to be a long-time member of the Litchfield Budget Committee and is a frequent contributor to the many financial issues facing the town and school budgets.

College hurler. After a combined 90 games with his college team and the Silver Knights and before heading back to where he is part of the Warrior’s starting rotation, Terrill plans on a relaxing August by going fishing and “doing a whole lotta nothing.” The FCBL, like its name, has a promising future.

Commissioner Hall acknowledged there will be one team added to the league next season, bringing the total to five. He is highly optimistic that a sixth team will commit and is hopeful that number can jump to eight teams before next season begins. With respect to the first season, Hall was very pleased, noting that organizing the four-team league in a short three-month span was extremely efficient. As far as the inaugural champs are concerned, Chambers who is the baseball coach at Franklin Pierce College and a former 32nd round draft selection of the Boston Red Sox, will be returning to lead the Silver Knights into battle next season. Chambers also played a season for the Lowell Spinners (Single A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox) who own and operate the Nashua team.
