Selectmen Question Relationship with LGC
by S. Aaron Shamshoyan The town’s membership with Local Government Center (LGC)
was discussed Monday night, as lawsuits trouble the Concord based firm. According to selectmen, a court case may cause the organization to pay $100 million back to members, causing the cost of services to go up or potentially seize operation. Memberships begin at $40 and up, with the town of Salem paying over $27,000 said Selectman Stephen Campbell, questioning if that level of membership is necessary. In exchange for membership, the town enjoys discounted health
insurance, workers compensation, and other services. Town Manager Keith Hickey is one of the 27 LGC Board members which includes the Mayor of Concord, school administrators, and town employees.
According to Hickey, the town was previously forced to buy
insurance from LGC, being the only provider agreed upon by the unions. Hickey said he had spoken with all five-town unions, who agreed to allow him to explore the possibility of another provider. Selectman Campbell raised concerns about Hickey’s involvement with LGC after reading a note that members could not be compensated for their involvement. Hickey responded saying he was not. Chairwoman Beth Roth commented that when hired, selectmen liked the idea of his involvement with LGC. “Mr. Hickey is performing as he was hired to perform,” she said. Hickey said he would be able to look into alternate insurance providers after his budget is complete.
Backpack Drive for Teens at Risk
submitted by Patty Klinger, Granite United Church In their ongoing effort to continue to give back to their community,
Granite United Church of Salem has been collecting new backpacks for at-risk teens in Southern New Hampshire and the Merrimack Valley. The backpack drive began two weeks ago and the church has collected almost 150 backpacks and school supplies for teens, aged 12-17. They are on their way to reach their goal of 600 backpacks before August 22. Granite has partnered with programs like the Key Program to help give teens in the area a chance to go back to school with a
and feel compelled to continue to give back to their community in any way they can. In the last year Granite has held a series of drives including two food drives collecting over 5,000 pounds of food, a shoe drive which resulted in over 1,200 pairs of gently used or new shoes going to 14 area shelters, they also contributed hundreds of toys to Toys for Tots and other community programs to benefit children and families. The unofficial slogan of Granite United Church, “no perfect people allowed,” captures the attitude of this group of people. Anyone, no matter their background or current situation is welcomed and encouraged to be a part of the community. There are four services each weekend at their Salem location, Saturday, 4 p.m., and Sunday, 8:45, 10, and 11:30 a.m. On October 16 Granite United will launch its second location and begin hosting services in Haverhill, MA. Formore information on Granite United, or the new service in Haverhill, go to www.

new backpack and school supplies. By getting involved and showing these young people that their community believes in them, that they can be successful and helping them to be better prepared for the school year, Granite wishes to continue to make an impact in their lives. Before Easter the Church put together over 100 Easter Baskets for this program and filled them with supplies and Easter candy. The response was overwhelming! Granite heard back that that the kids were moved by the “uncommon kindness” showed to them and that it was important for the children to know that the donations made to them and their families were in the “spirit of selfless giving.” Granite United Church, led by Pastor Anthony Milas, believes that churches should embody Jesus’ words “love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Based on this, the people of Granite believe they are “blessed to be a blessing,”
