The Word Around Town... Letters to our Editor

Seeking Two Host Families in the Salem High School Community

Salem High School will welcome a group of high school students for two

weeks from Mannheim, Germany! A tremendous response from Salem High School (SHS) families so far has allowed us to match every German student to a host family. If you would like to be considered as a back-up host family for a German teen in case something comes up with current hosts, please contact me for information. Can you host one of the teachers for 17 days? Both ladies are fluent in

English. Tey can be hosted together in one family, or can each be hosted separately by two different host families. Te host families for the teachers can be any family, with or without children. Tey have many interests; Martina likes walking, biking, swimming and has traveled quite a bit as a teacher including a year in Wisconsin; Christine enjoys drama, music, painting, swimming and biking; she too has traveled many times as a chaperone for student groups. A new opportunity to make a friend from Germany; Carousel Tours

representative, Sue Boswell will be working with Ms. Cox and the SHS Foreign Language Department. Tis is a great time to be a host family! We are looking for two families who can host an adult; who enjoy learning about a different culture and making lasting friendships. Te group is coming from the southwest part of Germany. Tey will be participating in various school days and full day activities and trips to area attractions including: Boston, MA, mountains, Harvard Square, Salem and more. Trips will depart and return from the high school. We will keep them busy from start of school day until 5 p.m. most days, Monday through Friday. Evenings and weekends are spent with the host family. If you have weekend plans already we can arrange for a fill-in host family, or better yet, bring your student along! Tey will have a true immersion into your family and a great experience as well. Tere are already 16 great families signed up to host. Home-school families are invited to join the fun! Te only requirement is a desire to welcome a foreign student into one’s family circle and show him/her the same interest and caring any traveler seeks when in a strange land, as well as to provide transportation to and from Salem High School. It is not as demanding as it seems. Te family provides a bed and meals

and allows the visitor to participate in its usual activities. Te group arrives on October 13 through October 30. All travelers speak

English, and have their own spending money. Tey want to come to the US to learn about our country and the most beneficial way is as a member of an American family. Tis can be the start of a lifelong friendship. A connection that can pass to the next generation as it has with so many families, and open doors to a lifetime of travel. So many wonderful stories begin with a family taking a chance and hosting for two weeks. We look forward to your call. Please call or email for more information:

Debt, Fraud, and Joblessness

Out of control drunken waste and spending habits are costing most Americans their financial future. Each child now born in the United States owes the government $34,000 in future taxes. Most money is owed to communist China as long-term debt (with interest) sadly by a free America, a free Constitutional country.

www.premierroofingnh.com Te tax and spend government and stock market have been in freefall.

Te Bush Administration spent trillions on the wars and Homeland security to protect America. However, the Obama administration experiment continued those policies and then added more trillions in bailouts to insurance, Wall Street, auto companies and banking housing markets (too big to fail friends of Obama’s administration). A big turn to government stimulus jobs over private jobs causing over 9-10 percent unemployment and 14-plus debt. Business is seeing unusual extra high cost by their insurance companies because of the Obamacare mandates. Te wasteful fraud issue continues unabated Obama said, “In 2009 they had 50 billion in Medicaid and Medicare fraud.” In 2010 and 2011 little has been done to control this waste of taxpayers’ money to help keep these programs afloat and premium costs in check (a billion a week lost)! Meanwhile, over 40 million families have been put in the difficult position of government food stamps, 40 percent more than four years ago. Tax increases in all forms are coming to Americans supported by

Washington liberal leftist Democrats and apparent hatred of President Obama toward free private business! Constitutional conservatives, elected persons in all levels of government, can reverse that trend by giving tax incentives for business that will create good paying jobs.

Ed Brooks - Salem Failures of Reganomics

“Here we go again” was the favorite debate retort by Ronald Regan so I want to borrow it in response to the “Usual Suspects” who have written more about myths than facts. Myth: He cut taxes. Truth: Te cuts were offset by the use of numerous fees for services that were previously free. Myth: He was hampered because he had no two-third vote to sustain a veto. Truth: He had complete control of both houses of Congress because in addition to Republicans he had the support of dozens of conservative Democrats (called boll weevils) who tipped the scales in his favor. Myth: He cut the size of

government. Truth: When he left office the size of government reached new highs (i.e., Secretary of State Alexander Haigh added 8,000 positions to his department with the declaration ‘no one is going to tell me what to do’). Tese are just a few examples of the failure of Reaganomics. So please go to your local library and research his administration. Be sure to read the book by his first budget director, David Stockman.
