submitted by Cindy Jury, Executive Director, Salem Family Resources-Success By 6 Salem Family Resources’ Parenting & Play Group families picked in-season blueberries to make blueberry muffins during groups. Parents, grandparents, and children took advantage of the beautiful day with a picnic lunch. Parenting & Play Groups include parents and
their young children who meet once a week with a group leader for fun, age-appropriate children’s learning activities, stories, snack, parent support, and discussions about raising children. Registrations are open for fall groups. More information about all programs is

Congressman Charlie Bass at Salem Senior Center
by S. Aaron Shamshoyan Congressman Charlie Bass hosted a meet and greet at the Salem Senior Center on Tuesday. Bass shook hands with the seniors as they played Bingo and listened to their concerns about the government. “I know we can’t spend a dime we don’t have because we’ve borrowed ourselves into debt,” said Maryanne, a Senior Center member. She was concerned with the rising debt levels. “China and Russia own us,” she said.
,
Another member Rose, felt a compromise would help. “I think in politics, you have to compromise,” she said. The two agreed they were concerned with rising taxes. Congressman Bass said he wants to get some of the money back, and would like to pull troops out of Afghanistan.
After visiting with members, Congressman Bass felt their
concerns to be about the economy. “The people were saying

in that room, make tough decisions; save this country for our children.” Bass agreed saying, “This is not a problem that happened overnight; when I decided to get back into public life last
year, this is what it was about.”
After the visit, the Congressman proceeded to the Town Hall and Fire Station.
Elks Sends Children to Copper Cannon
submitted by Louise Landry, Derry Salem Elks This year the Derry-Salem Elks was
able to send 30 local children between the ages of 9 to 13 to Copper Cannon for one week of outdoor living. The Derry-Salem Elks has been sending local children to camp every year for over 20 years. Besides the 30 children attending the camp this week, we were able to sponsor five older children for either a teen week or ranger camp and this year one of the older campers who attended Copper Cannon for a number of years became a councilor in training. Copper Cannon who is the Major State Project the New Hampshire
Elks Association is 128 acres outside of Franconia Notch. The Outdoor Education Center focuses on team building designed to promote unity, communication, and trust.

More than just leaning about and experiencing the great outdoors, the summer camp program is designed to teach the fundamentals of good citizenship, moral behavior, respect for self and others and to instill in each child how special he or she is, to send each child home with a sense of self-esteem, pride in themselves and the knowledge that a person’s worth is better measured for the inside than the outside.
