Introduction
July 8, 2011 Dear Students, Alumni, Parents, and Colleagues,
When I assumed the role as the senior Student Affairs officer at Trinity in February 2010, I wanted to address -- head-on -- the issues that created the greatest friction between the students and the institution. In my area those have been dining services, the residency requirement, and the relationship between the administration and the Greek community.
Following the 2010-11 academic year I am pleased to report that there has been a marked improvement in the relationship between the staff and the Greek community and that the system is as strong as ever. This is not a comprehensive annual report of the academic accomplishments or the many substantial philanthropic efforts of our organizations. It is intended as a progress report. This report will address some of the major initiatives and the directions we are headed. One good year won’t erase difficulties from the past. But it is a start. I appreciate the efforts of the Greek alumni and current organizations involved in this relationship: It matters – to all of us. Social interaction, academic excellence, service, and leadership are not only pillars of Greek life, but these values are closely aligned with those of the University.
The best way to move forward is to look forward, and focus on strengthening our already unique system. I am convinced that our brand of Greek Life, with nearly a quarter of our students participating, is the perfect system for the culture of our institution. In partnership, we can shape a system that honors excellence across its organizations. I have challenged the organizations to identify and promote that which makes each organization distinctive. It is gratifying when alumni return and meet student members who remind them of themselves. Our organizations are not just short-term gathering posts but platforms where the past, present, and future are permanently inter-connected.
I thank and acknowledge the Greek Council co-chairs from 2010-11 and 2011-12, the Greek Council, and the alumni who have worked to view our partnership with new energy.
Sincerely,
David M. Tuttle Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
