The Protivas bought their current farm

in Peace Valley 11 years ago from Allena Dryer, who owned Dryer’s Shoe Store in Mountain Home for more than 50 years with her husband, J.D. Dryer. In 1899, J.D.’s grandfather, Conrad Henry Dryer, gave the farm to his son, Dallas, and wife, Annie, as a wedding present. On the barn remains a faintly-painted “1899” as a reminder of its history. In Peace Valley Poultry’s first year of operation, they raised 200 chickens, and the number began to increase as local cus- tomers were eager to buy their product. This year, Peace Valley Poultry is rais- ing 6,000 Cornish Rock Cross chickens, about 600 broad-breasted white turkeys and seven grass-finished beef. The Protivas feed their poultry corn and roasted soybeans that are not genetically modified, although it’s harder to find. Last year, 93 percent of the nation’s soybeans and 86 percent of the nation’s corn were genetically engineered, accord- ing to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service.

YOUNG CHICKENS stay in a brooder for a few weeks until they’re old enough to survive outside.
