City’s free landscape, irrigation classes expand

Landscaping for Color joins Chandler’s lineup of fall landscaping and irrigation classes open to Chandler utility customers. And, for the fi rst time, residents can register for courses online.

“The popular workshops are designed to help residents learn how to use water more

effi ciently and still have lush-looking yards,” says City of Chandler Water Conservation Coordinator Cathy Rymer.

The schedule of workshops begins with Basic Yard Makeovers offered from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 30. Participants learn to create a “back yard oasis,” or make their landscape more child or pet friendly. Included in the class are easy step-by-step methods to conserve water while transforming a grass yard into outdoor living spaces that are cool, colorful, fragrant, and interesting. Some residents may be eligible for a rebate of up to $3,000.

“Chandler Smart” Landscaping, a two-part class that runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 10 and 17, teaches the basics of home landscape designs to create “attractive, comfortable, functional and sustainable yards.” Learn the concepts of design, how to plan for small spaces, the desert plant palette, plant selection and plant combinations. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yard layouts for use in design exercises. Water-Wise Edible Gardening, held from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Sept. 20, brings in a Master Gardener to help attendees succeed as gardeners and challenging the desert environment. Learn how to prepare beds, choose plants and care for vegetables, herbs, fruits and citrus.

Landscaping For Color runs from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 4, discussing how home gardeners can add color to their landscape year-round. Learn which plants offer an extended blooming season and thrive with little effort, as well as money-saving tips. Water Smart Workshops, a four-part series will be held on consecutive Thursdays from 6 to 8:45 p.m., addresses the components of irrigation systems, how to design and install them, how to program timers and how to troubleshoot when problems.
