involved in military and veterans organizations, including Military Offi cers Association of America and Army Aviation Association of America. PROUD: Fred Ferguson of Chandler took part in a Patriots dinner at the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention in Riverside, CA in 1999.

“There are no unimportant jobs in the military,” he says. “There are thousands and thousands and thousands of soldiers who also served but never were recognized.” This explains why Ferguson would rather talk about all members of the military, not just the ones like himself who happened to receive an award. “One of the best old clichés around is ‘freedom isn’t free,’” he says. “If you look back, there are a lot of good men and women who paid one hell of a high price so we can still have our freedom. They have all just done so much for us.”

The project, a collaboration between the City’s Community Services and Municipal Utilities departments, showcases the transformation of Chandler’s closed landfi ll near McQueen and Queen Creek Roads into a community special-use park offering disc golf, archery and a dog park.
