SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS

EEEGR

THE CONFERENCE WAS HELD AT GREAT YARMOUTH RACECOURSE AND WAS PRECEDED BY A LADIES’ NIGHT THE PREVIOUS EVENING WHICH HAS BECOME A VERY POPULAR SOCIAL NETWORKING ADDITION TO THE CONFERENCE PROGRAMME.

Ed’s note – your editor hoped to win the ‘Best Dressed Lady’ competition on the night (I wore a kilt!) but no joy there I’m afraid – not pretty enough I suppose.

CHAIRMANSHIP

Alan Barlow EEEGR’s Chairman was our host for the day and ensured everything ran smoothly, from the housekeeping arrangement to keeping the speakers on time, as well as being involved and commenting on all the speakers’ presentations. This ensured that everyone felt involved and part of a whole rather than a procession of individual speakers with individual views.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Alan introduced Gt. Yarmouth MP, Brandon Lewis and explained that he had a very busy meetings’ schedule, one of which was to return to Westminster to champion the case for the region to be one of the first to receive Enterprise Zone status.

It was refreshing to hear such a forthright and passionate presentation from Brandon backing the region as a whole and not just his particular constituency. As described earlier, historical differences have existed in the region and they are certainly not the only area where these regional issues have held back business progress.

It is very obvious by the advances that have been made already in East Anglia that the region has moved on and has had, for some time now, a ‘this is business, not personal’ approach, which others may learn from.

The wind energy industry is huge, and as has been noted, no matter how large companies are they must work together with others to ensure successful outcomes in the large projects which are experienced.

Brandon’s two main focuses were therefore on working together to achieve our energy needs, and in particular our renewable sources, with wind energy at the forefront. His second focus being on the backing of central government so that the plans already in place are achievable in ensuring the UK has a secure energy future.

OTHER SPEAKERS

Alan Barlow – covered some facts and figures on just how much business is available within the region. A £multi-billion energy portfolio of which wind energy is a predominant feature over the next 20 years.

He also covered EEEGR’S Skills for Energy Programme, which has been heralded as an exemplar and unique in its approach (detailed later within this regional focus feature within EEEGR’s profile).

There then followed key industry speakers on sectors as diverse as nuclear, bioenergy and electricity transmission, who stepped forward to detail their plans for the coming years.
