LEDʼs

LED Solutions transformed the Roman Bath’s in Englands historic town of Bath, using a variety of LED products to illumate the architecture.

beyond the previous lighting source. By using such products, LED Solutions were able to add an additional 4 individual spot lights, directed to illuminate four carved ladies symbolising the seasons. The dedicated lighting of the areas has created effects that had never been seen in such a historic building. All of the lighting zones are controllable using a fully interactive DMX controller that has the option of being controlled through an independent App used on the iPhone or any remote PC.

So, in this instance the use of LEDs allowed for a more extensive lighting design. LED Lighting Consultant at LED Solutions, Guy Young, comments “A lot of people have shied away from LEDs, thinking they cannot perform, but with TLC in any project you can achieve whatever effects are required”. Another company who have been championing the use of LED are Philips. Through a number of avenues Philips is proving that LEDs are a worthwhile choice. One project that has allowed the use of LEDs to prove their worth is Tom Harfleet’s Conceptual Garden, “The Bright Idea”,

which recently won a Silver-Gilt Flora award at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2011. The garden, which was sponsored by Philips, uses 2500 LEDs and shows how technology and nature are linked. The project embodies the human thought

process, replicating the brainwave of someone who is dreaming. A fine mesh tube was created which spanned the length of the garden and had a central spine covered in LEDs that pulsed along the 27metre structure reinforcing the wave theme.

Landscape Architect and designer of the

project Tom Harfleet describes how LEDs brought the project to life; “The flexible and dynamic characteristics of LEDs enabled me to realize this “eureka moment”. I am delighted to have won the Silver Gilt award but more than that I am really pleased by the way in which The Bright Idea garden was received by the public”.

With the advancements and more daring uses of the technology, the humble LED is beginning to prove its worth as more than just the efficient option.
