EXCELLENCE AWARD PROJECT: CHA CHA THÉ, TAIPEI, TAIWAN LIGHTING DESIGN: THE FLAMING BEACON Cha Cha Thé is a new concept store celebrating the rich history of Chinese tea-drinking culture. Its flagship store, built within an ex- isting space containing unenviable low ceilings and a predominantly white palate, challenged the lighting designers to create a visually interesting and modulated space. This was achieved through care- ful integration of light sources within the various joinery elements to place light only where it was needed, as any spill light became more than enough for ambient background illumination. “The miniature, warm, pinhole lighting of Cha Cha Thé evokes antiquity, ceremony, scent and love of the finer things in life,” one judge commented of the project. “The design uses the space well, with lighting appropriate to every focal point.”

PROJECT: ELEANOR AND WILSON GREATBATCH PAVILION, BUFFALO, NY, USA LIGHTING DESIGN: ARUP LIGHTING
The architect’s approach to designing a visitor’s center for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex resulted in a subtle dialogue between old and new, us- ing contrasting concepts rather than imitation. The lighting design reinforces the concept, emphasising the differences between the two works, maintain- ing transparency and lightness in contrast to the original house’s introverted
nature. The transparent floor-to-ceiling façade provides panoramic views of the historic house and ample controlled daylight into the orientation space. related to the house in the horizontal exhibit cases throughout the space. “It is great to see a beautiful, clean ceiling—the lighting design is simple and ef- fective by concealing lighting within display cases and creating focal points and floating wall effects,” commented one IALD Lighting Design Awards judge.
EXCELLENCE AWARD PROJECT: HELSINGBORG WATERFRONT, SWEDEN LIGHTING DESIGN: ÅF – HANSEN & HENNEBERG The lighting of the Helsinborg Waterfront, which includes recreational urban spaces, a promenade and a street, needed to tackle the challenges associated with lighting areas near water, including avoiding unwanted water reflec- tion and preserving the free view of the night sky and ocean. Light intensity and level of staging gradually decreases towards the water, leaving the beach unspoiled.
“Forget floodlighting, obnoxious dropped lenses from streetlights, light trespass and the unnatural feeling so many outdoor public promenades have – this project is a playground!” one judge exclaimed. “The lighting, by itself, takes charge of setting the stage for unique human interactions.”

Dix-sept lauréats en projets de conception d’éclairages architecturaux venus de neuf pays sont les vainqueurs des 28emes Récompenses annueles de l’Association Internationale de Concepteurs d’Eclairages (IALD), annoncés lors d’une présentation qui s’est tenue le 18 mai au Crystal Tea Room de Philadelphie, en Pennsylvanie aux USA. Des 17 projets reconnus, trois
entrées ont ont remporté des Citations Spéciales, huit prix de mérite et six prix d’Excellence. Pour accepter le prix d’Excellence en conceptions d’éclairage, Andreas Schulz était présent ainsi qu’IALD et Stephan Thiele de Licht Kunst Licht AG pour le Telekombridge de Bonn, en Allemagne. Ce projet primé, ainsi que les rapports sur tous les autres projets gagnants, sont présentés dans des publications séparées avec images et crédits, quand l’accord a été donné. Par ailleurs, Jonathan Speirs de Speirs and Major a été nommé membre hono- raire de l’IALD lors de la cérémonie, en reconnaissance de son engagement exceptionnel au sein de la profes- sion. Un total de 24 récompenses ont été remises de l’iALD, comprenant un Prix Radiance, un précédent. remporté trois fois de suite.
