IALD REWARDS THE RADIANT
Licht Kunst Licht added the world’s most prestigious lighting design award to its recent successes whilst a legend of the lighting design profession was honoured at Philadelphia’s iconic Crystal Tea Room during Lightfair International.
RADIANCE AWARD PROJECT: TELEKOM BRIDGE, BONN, GERMANY LIGHTING DESIGN: LICHT KUNST LICHT Licht Kunst Licht AG developed a dynamic lighting concept with interactive ele- ments. The design accents the sweeping filigree architecture of the bridge and artistically translates the client’s slogan to pedestrians: staff members and the public can now ‘Experience the Connection’ on the bridge. Another particularly clear reference to Telekom AG is achieved by utilising its CI colour, magenta. “Not only does this bridge change lighting effects when it senses humans en- countering it, but it also hits the mark in messaging from its telecommunication sponsor - connections, luminous pathways, speed and creativity,” stated one IALD International Lighting Design Awards judge. “The designers have skillfully applied their efforts at making a showpiece that engages the public and is technically successful.”

HONORARY AWARD JONATHAN SPEIRS OF SPEIRS AND MAJOR
Jonathan Speirs of UK lighting design practice Speirs and Major was made an honorary member of the IALD at the ceremony in recognition of his ‘outstanding commitment to the lighting design profession’. The practice has won a total of 24 awards from the IALD including winning the Radiance Award an unprecedent- ed three times in a row - Barajas International Airport (2008), 3 More London (2009) and the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi (2010).
“His passion and love for lighting makes us all proud to be a part of this indus- try,” said IALD president Kathy Abernathy. “This was one of the best moments of my presidency, and one that I will cherish forever. I’m looking forward to seeing Jonathan at many more events, as he is the strongest, most courageous person I know.”
EXCELLENCE AWARD PROJECT: AMAN RESORT, NEW DELHI, INDIA LIGHTING DESIGN: LIGHTING PLANNERS ASSOCIATES The traditional Indian screen known as jaali is prominently featured in the architecture of the New Delhi Aman Resort. Artistically presenting the jaali was integral to the success of the Lighting Planners Associates design team.
“The screens are the key architectural feature of this project, and the designer has used both light and shadow successfully,” one IALD awards judge commented of the project. “Skillful placement of luminaires enhances textured wall surfaces and balance well with the silhouette of screens, while others are uplit, creating a sheer, ethereal effect, or have luminous backlighting – it is a nice combination.”
