important road project in the city centre and the site currently splits the city in two. It has the first major LED roadway lighting system installed in the city and I was there to witness the testing and site measurement of the first 3-lane 80kph section available. The project has Ruud BetaLED Edge fixtures on decorative columns and is the first example of the new approach to the Emirates roads away from current warm SON, high luminance practice and it was quite an experience to see and feel how far LED technology has come in such a relatively short period of time. There is a 2.4km tunnel running under the street and this will have LED throughout too. At least, I thought with relief, when this is ready to inspect it can be at any time and I don’t need to book another hotel! One final light moment to tell you about happened last month, when I was called to see the Executive Director at the end of the week, to be told I am accompanying him to London in a few days to attend an Awards Interview for the Sheikh Zayed Bridge. We have been nominated in the International Category for the 2011 British Construction Industry Awards and, as the Client, we wanted to give our support to the design team. So in no time at all I found myself a bit dazed in my home town, having an espresso at Monmouth Coffee in Borough Market, did our bit for the interview in the Institute of Civil Engineers in Westminster and came back. So quick was the visit that I didn’t tell anyone I was popping back, but I did manage to get a free afternoon before the return flight, so I caught a train to my father’s house and knocked on the door with a bottle of Malt hoping to give him the surprise of his life. But in the typically calm understated Scotsman way he has, he opened the door, the look of confusion lasted only a fraction of a second and then he said “Ahh, that’s nice you are over, come in and have a coffee... are you staying for tea?” Cool customer, my Dad! martin.valentine@adm.abudhabi.ae
