Bike ride to benefit paralyzed Springfield Pro Bike Shop owner

SPRINGFIELD – This past winter, Springfield’s Pro Bike Shop owner, Jerry Rademacher was severely injured while walking home from his bike shop. The accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Rademacher has lived and

breathed cycling his whole life racing, building, selling, and repairing bikes for more than 40 years. He and his brother Chris have been instrumental in getting literally hundreds of people to love and immerse themselves in the sport of

cycling.

This benefit is for the purpose of helping Rademacher and his wife, Irene, make the transition into their new way of life easier for them. Organizers are hoping to raise enough funds for them to purchase an equipped van and a specialized wheelchair so that he can get back to work doing what he does best – building, repairing and selling bikes.

Join organizers for this family- friendly event, which will include a

25-, 60-, or 100-mile bike ride, good food, music, raffle, and fun and games for all.

The ride will take place on Aug. 28 at Hatfield Lions Club, Billings Way, Hatfield. Ride registration is from 7 to 9 a.m. Social time: 1 to 6 p.m. Donation: $25 (also enters riders in the raffle). Kids younger than 12 are free. Contact Bob at 665-7505 or

bmajowicz@comcast.net or George at 527-0330 or gwill@verizon.net for more information.

Heartsong offers Laughter Yoga

EAST LONGMEADOW – Laughter Yoga combines fun, easy to learn, laughter exercises with simple, calming Yogic Breathing (Pranayama). This program is offered on the first Sunday of each month at Heartsong Yoga on North Main Street. The next sessions with Robert

Rivest will take place Sept. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4. Laughter Yoga is a complete

well-being workout that is sweeping the world. In 1995, Dr. Madan Kataria, a physician from Mumbai, India, launched the first Laughter Club with merely a handful of people. Today, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with more

ones you or those you are close to you should consider when the stakes are high.

“These are hospitals we call

‘high performers.’ They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures,” Comarow continued.

Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties – death rates, patient safety, procedure volume, and other objective data.

Responses to a national

survey, in which physicians were asked to name hospitals they consider best in their specialty for the toughest cases, also were factored in.

than 6,000 Social Laughter Clubs in about 60 countries. Laughter Yoga is based on a

scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between laughter exercises and real laughter. Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy and get the same physiological and psychological benefits (boosts to the immune system, release of endorphins, increased oxygen intake, decreased stress hormones, creation of a joyful connection with others, and enables people to laugh more easily at life’s trials). In Laughter Yoga Clubs,

laughter is joyfully simulated in a group with full body laughter

exercises/games and childlike playfulness. The “simulated” laughter soon turns into real and contagious laughter that lifts the spirits and carries over into every day lives. Rivest is a certified Laughter

Yoga Leader, a comic mime artist and a stress management educator. Since 1983 Rivest has given more than 5,000 presentations on mime, laughter, health and stress management. From his initial training in mime, dance, theater, and improvisation in Paris and New York City, Rivest expanded his studies to include meditation, tai- chi, yoga, qigong, and Laughter Yoga.
