COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SCHEME SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO PROVIDE CLASSROOM ASSISTANTS
Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD, a former primary school principal, has called on the Ministers for Education and Social Protection to consider extending
the
Community Employment Scheme
so
additional assistants

that be
provided for schools. “I see this as a way of providing quality work experience for those on CE Schemes but also as a way of providing assistance to schools in helping to deal with issues that may arise in a
large setting. This could be classroom
particularly helpful in Junior Infants classes. It would also supplement and complement the existing Special Needs Assistants' Scheme. “I have spoken to Minister Quinn about this proposal and he has assured me he will give it due consideration.”
