August 5, 2011 - 11 Salem Patriot by Marc Ayotte Hey Tarheels, listen up! There’s a golfer in this

neck of the woods who has aspirations of striking the pill for the UNC golf team in the fall of 2012.

“It would be really cool to go to the University of North Carolina, or in that area,” noted Kyle Gaudette. However, as a local option, the Salem

Re-enacting the shot of his hole in one on the par 3, 11th hole at Scottish Highlands GC in Salem is Kyle Gaudette

High School (SHS) standout acknowledges UNH is a great school and wouldn’t mind teeing it up there. Most of us who play golf, myself included, have never had bragging rights of striking a tee shot on a par three and never having to take the putter out of the bag before registering your score on the card. On Wednesday, July 20, incoming SHS senior golfer Kyle Gaudette had such good fortune. With his Titleist six iron in hand, the Ricky Fowler-kind of-look-alike Gaudette made a sweet pass at the ball on the par 3, 176 yard hole at Scottish Highland Golf Course in Salem. A few seconds later, one of the members in his foursome alluded to the fact that the ball may be in the hole. It was - a feat, that when statistically analyzed, is very infrequent. The hole in one came on the heels of a first hole-birdie (he started on the back nine) that left the SHS golfer 3 under par after two holes and jokingly ready to sign his card and call it a day. And by the way, although not clad in trademark Fowler vibrant blue and orange, Gaudette notes that the young Anaheim, CA, native happens to be his favorite PGA player. Most impressive about Gaudette’s ‘one’ was that it occurred during competition in a New England PGA Junior Tour Event. It wasn’t during a casual round with buds where the notion of legitimacy may have come in to question. His ace came en route to a dazzling 5 over par 34-42-76, over the 6,249 yard Scottish layout, under competitive pressure. Starting with club in hand, at the tender age of three, Gaudette could be found at the driving range. It wasn’t until many days later at the ripe old age of 5 that he started hitting the links. With a love for the game, Gaudette’s outlook is pretty simple; “I want to see how far this game takes me.” His mother, Carolyn simply noted, “I love watching him play.” Noticing that Kyle had good hand-eye coordination at an early age, his parents encouraged him to pursue golf. With both parents playing golf from a more recreational approach, Mrs. Gaudette freely

admits that they leave the competitive golf to their son. With such parental support and private lessons for the last three years in full swing, the future looks very bright for the ambitious Blue Devil - as such, maybe Duke University is in the running?

And should you be wondering if the dimpled sphere, used as a prop in achieving the hole in one, is displayed upon a mantle in the Gaudette household, stop! Wanting to keep the good luck flowing, Kyle teed up his coveted ball on the 12th hole. Unfortunately, Guadette’s tee-ball went wide right into the water and without a snorkel in his Titleist bag, the trophy ball was history; “I didn’t realize it at first,” Gaudette said of his errant t-shot landing in the water. Approaching the scene of the crime, he followed up with a little disbelieving one on self-conversation; “that was the hole in one ball.” Don’t worry too much - I think in his golf career, Gaudette has a couple more aces up his sleeve!
