Merlin Entertainments Group has announced that it is to develop a new €15m (£13.1m, US$20.7m) Sea Life


attraction as part of the Municipality of Rome's Second Tourist Pole development. The attractions operator has secured


an agreement with Mare Nostrum Romae S.r.L for the aquarium, which will be located in the Acquario di Roma retail and leisure complex. Construction work has already commenced on site. www.merlinentertainments.biz

OPENING 2012


The zoo's fi ve-acre (two-hectare) expansion project will sit on a section of land at the top of the zoo and will consist of a new veterinary hospital and education centre, a 930sq m (10,000sq ft) facility for reptiles and amphibians and 10 to 13 outdoor exhibits. Hippo Enclosure at Memphis Zoo Memphis, Tennessee, USA

Hippopotami at Memphis Zoo in Tennessee will be treated to a new home next year when the US$16m (£11m, €13.1m) Zambezi Hippo River Camp opens. The exhibit will also provide a natural habitat for Nile crocodiles, fl amingos and, appearing for the fi rst time at the zoo, okapi. www.memphiszoo.org

Connected by a boat ride, the £30m (€34m, US$49.2m) Islands project will pull together some of the zoo's existing animal species to create a themed experience. It will include educational exhibits, play areas, restaurants and village-style food stands. Work on the
