Data Center Locations: Advertorial

Looking for a safe, green and cool place to build your datacenter? Sweden is the answer!

Country profile

Sweden is a highly competitive economy, combining access to new products

and technologies with leading edge skills and groundbreaking innovation. As the largest market in the Baltic Sea region, both in terms of size and investment flows, Sweden has become the country of choice for a majority of foreign companies that establish a presence in the Nordic region.

Locating datacenters in Sweden As the European leader in climate-friendly energy and sustainable technologies, Sweden is an ideal choice for large-scale data center operations. Low electricity prices, solid energy infrastructure, secure locations, developable land and skilled labor provide a compelling business case.

Sweden has an excellent communications infrastructure and is a major network hub for internet traffic to and from Eastern Europe, in particular Russia.

Electricity prices are among the lowest in Europe and additional incentives apply in the north of the country. The national power generation mix is 100 percent carbon dioxide neutral and datacenters can be powered by 100 percent renewable electricity. Extensive investments in windpower offer exciting opportunities, while incentive

schemes exist to fix electricity tariffs at very attractive levels.

Datacenter builders can utilize the strength of Sweden’s electricity grid, built to support a long tradition of mission-critical, energy intensive industries such as steel production, mining, pulp and paper and heavy manufacturing.

Sweden’s cool climate is a prime advantage, substantially improving the effectiveness of free cooling solutions. Sweden is also the world leader in district heating: 80 percent of district energy is heat that would otherwise have gone to waste. Sweden pioneered district cooling back in 1992, and today more than 30 plants deliver more than 1 TWh of district cooling every year, some of it used for datacenters.

Expertise in these fields forms an outstanding platform for sustainable business.

The Swedish economy is unique, the trend for the past 20 years is growing the economy while at the same time cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The national target is to cut carbon dioxide emissions by an additional 40 percent by 2020.

Sweden’s offer A number of greenfield and conversion sites have been identified, with various preconditions suitable for different types of datacenter needs. Some are “pre-packaged” to

include preparations for the required

types of permits such as building, generator, environmental assessments, etc to speed up the implementation process.

Leaders in innovation and R&D Sweden built its economic base on successful development

of key industrial sectors,

aided by a rich supply of raw materials and pioneering inventions. A strong culture of innovation has propelled Sweden to the technological forefront.

Sweden has long been a leader in developing IT and telecoms infrastructure. A World Economic Forum report in 2011 said: "Sweden offers one of the best climates for technological adoption

and innovation. Penetration of

new technologies is among the densest in the world.”
