MINORITY REPORT
LETTER OF THE MONTH PRIDE WHAT?
I barely heard about Pride this year. Yet lots of people gathered around Trafalgar Square and Soho – which would make some wrongly think that it was a huge success. I disagree. A crowd of tourists and some little stages doesn’t add much to an event that surely has had better days. I couldn’t find more details about the event on its own website; a close look at the web and literature printed about 2011’s Pride shows that even many of the sponsors seem to have run away from the tired format this year. Call me naïve or extravagantly creative for thinking that it could be much better but I can’t understand a festival that doesn’t have lots of activities going on. A parade isn’t a festival. It is a parade. I didn’t see anything like an LGBT short film festival, more music, photo exhibition or anything else. Actually, I didn’t see any advertising about Pride this year in the build up to Saturday 2 July, apart from a couple of posters displayed on the tube platforms. I think that 2012 can be a great opportunity to have a fantastic Pride in London. However if the event happens to be carried by the same organisers from the past couple of years I doubt we will have much to look forward to. Marcio Delgado, E4
WRITE TO US AND WIN A DVD...
I read with interest and horror your feature about the English Defence League [OITC – July 2011]. What a sad, bitter and delusional bunch of people. However, although the writer did accurately illustrate that the group is attracting support from a diverse range of people, I’m still not convinced that it enjoys large gay support – and an interview with a few more gay supporters wouldn’t have gone amiss. Or is it simply the new taboo that no-one dare speak about? Marek, N17
SILVER SERVICE DESIGN DELIGHT
Congratulations on your re-design. Out In The City is usually my favourite read on the gay scene, and definitely the only magazine I can be bothered to carry home. I loved the interview with Charlie Condou – what a great ambassador for the gay cause. I also think it’s great that you’re doing something on older LGBT people with your articles on the Opening Doors project. The interview with Michael Brown was very interesting. I certainly I get to live as full and long a life as
I like your new format and thanks for a great magazine. However, I would like to especially thank you for the excellent article on Age UK’s Opening Doors project. This is a topic that certainly needs more publicity since as you say the older LGBTs are often forgotten. I am in my late sixties and, although I realised I was ‘different’ from an early age, I wasn’t able to acknowledge my sexuality until later in life. I felt pressured into marriage but, after many years, separated so I could lead the life I really wanted. Many older LGBT people have experienced problems in their younger years which have left deep, lasting scars. Projects like Opening Doors is a godsend but sadly, funding is being cut. I hope younger people recognise the Opening Doors project and provide funds as well as their time. One day, they may need it too. Alan, EC3
Anyone who had a letter printed this month won a copy of new DVD David’s Birthday
Anyone who has a letter published in the September issue of Out In The City will win a copy of new DVD Meet Monica Velour. This charming, independent movie stars the fabulous Kim Cattrall (Sex & The City) as a former 1980’s porn star with a teenage stalker. The film is out now –and you can see our interview with Kim on page 20 of this issue. The writer of September’s Letter Of The Month will win a copy of Meet Monica Velour and Man at Bath – a sexually-charged slice of French arthouse cinema from director Christophe Honoré, which details the disintegrating relationship between Omar and Emmanuel – the latter played by François Sagat. The film is released on DVD by Peccadillo Pictures on 29 August. Send letters to
editorial@outmag.co.uk, and please include your name and address if you want to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
