Who could not be moved by the pictures from New York this month of the first same-sex marriage ceremonies to take place in the city? The change in the state law was announced the day before the city celebrated with its annual LGBT Pride parade. The first marriages took place in Manhattan in late July, with no shortage of couples lining up to have their relationships legally recognised. What was so moving was the rich diversity of
people getting hitched: men and women, young and old, from across the ethnic spectrum. Again, as we discovered when civil unions became law in this country in 2005, there are some couples out there who have quietly been getting on with their lives together for many years (nearly four decades in one case); some couples had been waiting for this day for a long, long time. Although New York is not the first American

state to legalise gay marriage, it is, undoubtedly, the most high-profile and largest. It is also home to a huge LGBT community, so the clerk’s offices will surely be kept busy over the coming months. Acknowledged as its cultural capital, New York has always proved influential over American culture. It’s no coincidence that the modern gay rights movement began on Christopher Street with the Stonewall Riots in 1969. Unlike the UK, where civil partners are instantly granted all the same legal rights as married couples, gay marriages in New York do not enjoy recognition by the Federal Government. For example, same-sex married couples can file a joint tax return in New York State, but are not able to file a joint federal tax return. However, campaigners hope that the arrival of gay marriage in New York may represent a turning of the tide – and precipitate changes to the national Defense of Marriage Act. Such changes cannot come too soon. As we’ve known for six years, allowing gay people to form legally-recognised unions harms no one and does not lead to the disintegration of society! This month’s cover star is Casey Spooner – an
out and proud New Yorker, who chats to us about his new solo career and the changes taking place in his home city. Enjoy the issue, and keep sending us your
feedback.
