Igniting Your Writing Path
“Writing the Story Within” 7-week online mentorship program with Chip Richards
It’s three hours before dawn... I fell asleep putting Josh to bed, but now I’m up, and grateful to be so. There is an energy in the air that makes me feel like I’m holding a special secret. Maybe it’s more of an absence of energy, an open space that’s usually filled with movement, voices, cell phones and vehicles. Very few are awake at this time, and if you are one of us, you will agree that everything feels different. It’s palpable. There is a quietness of being that seems to illuminate everything. Even the wind and the waters settle in this time. I used to wonder why the lake was so calm and silky in the morning. Why the ocean showed up so smooth. But now I know. It’s because of this pre- dawn quiet. This mandatory pause between the exhale of yesterday and the in-breath of tomorrow. Farmers, bakers, monks and young mothers. These are the only ones awake at this time. Quietly, mindfully tending to their task. Tilling soil, kneading dough, seeding their prayers and feeding their children. Sacred creation time.
I won’t lie. The writing path is not always easy. It is not all flow
and grace with the magic of the Muse blessing each word, note and comma… At least it hasn’t always been that way for me.
I have certainly had my share of moments when it feels as
though the words are coming through me like a crystal river, but I have also experienced moments when I feel like I’m turning on a stiff garden hose that’s been sitting under the house all winter. That distant sputtering noise echoes up the coil as the water crinkles and seeps its way through kinks and blockages, arriving in rusty spitting bursts like a hairball choking cat... By the time those first words hit the page (if they actually arrive), my critical mind is already fidgeting, doubting and rewriting them, questioning the validity of this whole writing impulse.
The truth is, writing can be awkward, painful, confusing and
overwhelming… It can be boring, lonely and intimidating. It can bring up dormant feelings of self-doubt and criticism. It can unearth energies of angst, judgment, procrastination, resistance and guilt – to name a few. So why do we do it?
In my experience, we write for the same reason that surfers rise
before dawn, that drummers play into the night, that mountaineers endure sub-zero winds on the ledge of a lofty peak (all of which I have also done in order to compare notes). We write to connect with and express a part of ourselves that we yearn for but don’t always get to experience in everyday life. We write to feel the energy of the Universe being expressed uniquely through us. We write to come closer to God.
This is why I rose at 4:30 this morning and will likely do the same
tomorrow – feet close to the heater, torso bundled in layers, hat and scarf. I can say that I’m working on a book, but in truth I’m using these words like the surfer uses waves, to guide me to that place of connection with the ocean of life… in hopes that I may bring a bit of that magic through onto the page and into my day for all to share.
There are a thousand reasons your mind may conjure as to why
next week or next year might be a better time to start (or finish!) writing your story. But every time one of us makes a choice to move through layers of resistance and doubt and venture into the creative field beyond – we open the doorway a little more to our own true self-realisation and expression in the world. What greater task could there possibly be?
The stories we tell light the path we walk as a people and a
planet – so if you have a story that is brewing inside of you, NOW is most certainly the time.
Join us for the Spring 2011 session of Writing the Story Within – a 7-week online mentorship journey into the heart of STORY and your true creative voice. It’s time to bring your story through onto the page, the screen… and beyond.
